Before #NASAWebb, it had been 30+ years since astronomers looked closely at Neptune. With Webb, scientists imaged the planet’s auroras and studied its atmosphere, including unexpectedly finding a significant drop in temperature—all at a distance.

A star-forming region in our Milky Way galaxy. This image resembles a tangle of dark pink hair flowing upward that is dotted with dozens of colorful orbs in various sizes. A system where two galaxies are in the process of merging set against a star-filled black background. Two white clusters meet, backed by hot pink tendrils, swirls of speckled orange, and gauzy steel blue ribbons. They gleam with golden shafts of light.

There are no expansive, glowing eyes in this Hubble image. This “face” is the result of two galaxies that collided head-on and have begun to intertwine. They will merge completely in 1-2 billion years. For now, they make up a ring galaxy, a rare classification. Credit: NASA/ESA 🔭 🧪 🎃
Galaxy merger that resembles a face with large, glowing yellow eyes. At the center are two bright white, fuzzy ovals that appear side by side. These white ovals are the cores of the galaxies. The right galaxy’s core has a brown ring of dust and gas around it and appears fully face-on. The left galaxy is appears at a slight angle, but is mainly face-on. Together, they appear to make up the “eyes” of the “face.” Outside this core are lanes of blue gas and dust, which take the shape of a rough oval, and are about as large as a head when compared to the size and appearance of the galaxies. Strewn throughout the image are many fuzzy streaks and dots, which are galaxies and stars respectively.

A large planetary nebula. The nebula’s central star is hidden by a blotchy pinkish cloud of dust. A strong red light radiates from this area, illuminating the nearby dust. This three-armed spiral galaxy sits 100 million light-years away in the constellation Leo Minor. In a more zoomed-out image, you would see other galaxies nearby, one close enough to slightly interact with NGC 3430. Credit: ESA/Hubble and NASA. 🔭 🧪
A spiral galaxy with three prominent arms wrapping around it, and with a haze of stars, gas, and dark dust between the arms. It appears slightly off center, toward the right of the frame. There are shining blue points, which are clusters of stars, throughout the arms and some patches of gas beyond the galaxy’s edge, where stars are forming. The center of the galaxy also shines brightly in yellow-white light. It is on a dark background where some small orange dots mark distant galaxies.

A star field is speckled across the image. The stars are of many sizes. They range from small, faint points of light to larger, closer, brighter, and more fully resolved stars with 8-point diffraction spikes. The stars vary in color, the majority of which have a blue or orange hue. The upper-right portion of the image has wispy, translucent, cloud-like streaks rising from the nebula running along the bottom portion of the image. The cloudy formation shown across the bottom varies in density and ranges from translucent to opaque. The cloud-like structure of the nebula contains ridges, peaks, and valleys – an appearance very similar to a mountain range. Many of the larger stars shine brightly along the edges of the nebula’s cloud-like structure.

The current form of the space triangle on the right is due to a gravitational tug-of-war with the galaxy to its left. These galaxies, captured by Hubble, are known as Arp 143. They have been bonded since they collided millions of years ago: bit.ly/3ASVQ8a 🔭 🧪
Two galaxies after a head-on collision. The galaxy to the left has a bright white core surrounded by very fuzzy gas and dust. The matter becomes more diffuse farther away from its center. The galaxy on the right has brown, dusty filaments around a fuzzy white core. This core is surrounded by a roughly ring-shaped area of of light blue stars. The ring is flat on the top and sides, and irregular at the bottom, roughly forming a triangle. There are red pockets of gas and young blue star clusters dotted around the ring. Several positions on this ring have dotted pockets of red. There are orange, red, and white galaxies strewn throughout the background of space, which is black.

@NASAHubble saw NGC 602 harboring very young low-mass stars; Webb is showing us how significant and extensive brown dwarfs may be here. This will help us understand how brown dwarfs form, particularly in an environment similar to the harsh conditions of the early Universe.
