The background of this graphic is a close-up of the Portraits of Decay book cover, with black on the left giving way to a riot of haphazardly streaked colors in greens, blues, yellows, some pink, and the red of blood. In the upper right, Portraits of Decay is spelled out in capital letters also textured with the cover’s paint spatters and a fly. A roughly circular green patch in the main part of the graphic reads “Online launch event: 10.21.25. 8 PM ET. J.R. Blanes, reading and conversation with Christa Wojciechowski.” The Portraits of Decay paperback sits to the right of this, and the Ruadán Books logo is centered at the bottom of the image.

Here we go, #HorrorWritersChat!
Today is the 1st October, beginning of spooky season, if you ever let it end, and that means it's International Day of Older Persons.
I like the idea of it being International Longevity Day but it isn't that yet. Today is about ageing and horror.

I think older characters can bring wisdom to a story—though thats not necessarily always true. They can also have deep seeded regrets or guilt over something they’ve done—or not done. They also may be staring down their own mortality. #horrorwriterschat

IT WANTS US ALIVE has a menopausal woman as the main character, kicking ass and taking names. She's got a gun, a harp, and a falcon. Her knees crack and her back hurts and she admires how the younger soldiers bounce. But she also has the wisdom to look deeper for answers.

Gather close, #HorrorWritersChat bods, whether you creak, or not. And believe me, many of us creaked in our teens, it's all good.
Age is just one factor.
But it's an interesting one that we do overlook. How many of us actually have older characters in our books, that aren't the wise mentor type?
