I understand why racists want to conflate illegal with legal immigration, recently-arrived immigrants with long-term residents, UK-born minorities with non-UK born. The fundamental reason the US doesn’t put living presidents on coins is that WE ARE NOT A MONARCHY! So non-monarchical are we that it took until 1909 for the first NO-LONGER-LIVING president to appear on a regular-issue US coin (the Lincoln cent).

The administration works intentionally and nonstop to stoke public confusion such that migrants of ANY status will be widely understood to be "illegals" and "criminals," giving the admin cover for absolutely reprehensible behavior.
