I found looking at DU students work incredible. Spending 8 weeks looking at art in museums, prepared me for admiring the DU artists' work. I think before this class I wouldn't have truly appreciated their art but after spending so much time with different art I was able to.

This week we visited 'Biophilia: Nature Reimagined' at the Denver Art Museum and it was some of the coolest and most interesting art I have seen. I enjoyed this exhibit so much.

Another piece I really liked at Union Hall is “Bycatcher” by Sarah McCormick. This one reminded me of a pile of stuffed animals in the corner of a child’s bedroom. My sister and I had many stuffed animals so I looked at the piece with very fond memories.

I really enjoyed the visit to Union Hall because it was such a small gallery. There was time to admire each piece in depth. I also appreciate that these pieces are all new and often from a local artist which I think giving local artists a place to exhibit is very important.

The extract from Pamela Lee about contemporary art history resonates with my piece this week. I enjoy understanding the historical background to artwork to gain some insight into the inspiration behind the artwork so I think this essay resonates with the piece by Ken Gun Min for me.

Visiting the Museum of Contemporary Art this week was a nice change in our weekly visits to the DAM. I loved that the MCA is small enough to be able to walk through all of the galleries and then choose to spend more time with one piece.

The essay, "On Forgetting", the book "What is Contemporary Art?" resonates with a few pieces I have seen including "1880 Crow Peace Delegation". This essay starts out describing how there is a fine line between needing to remember and having to forget to move on.

I believe a work of art can make an argument. There have been many works that point out and fight against prejudice. Art can often be used to spark social change because of their ability to make the viewer feel angry or sympathetic about a cause.

The "Atomic Rainbow" resonates with the excerpt from Ackbar Abbas's book when he is describing how China claimed Hong Kong as its territory, similar to how these Pacific Islands were taken advantage of because of their colonists. Both of these events can described as "a haunting".

The piece I chose to sit with this week is “1880 Crow Peace Delegation” a series by Wendy Red Star. These are prints of photographs from the Smithsonian’s National Anthropological Archives. These prints have annotations on them in red ink.

The materials used in No Man Is An Island (With Atomic Rainbow) were stereotypical tourist leis. The leis colors draw you into the piece originally and then add so much more to the meaning of the artwork. The brightness made it standout to me in a slightly dark room and why I chose it.

I don't think there has been an end to contemporary yet. The contemporary is about the present so there may never be an end to contemporary art since the present is always changing.

I think the movement towards contemporary art began around the 1970s however, some of those pieces could be considered historical now.

I don't think there are many limits for contemporary art. If the art is not by a present artist or present in time then that would not be considered contemporary.

Often we call things outside of "contemporary" historical however, there are specific movements and genres they fall into as well.

Contemporary art is the art of people who are living and questioning today. There is often a criticizing idea behind something that is relevant today in politics and society. But, this art can also just be created to provoke thought or emotion in the viewer.

I enjoyed this piece because of the expression of the seasons. There is a coldness to the background of winter but moving into spring there is a joyful and light feeling in the air. The contrast between each one is slight since the composition is similar yet there if you look closely.

Dancer by Perry Olanna is a fun piece full of movement. It’s clear even without the title that the person is dancing and moving. This piece of artwork caught my eye immediately in the museum because of how fun and light it seems.

Palapa by Esteban Caicedo Cortés is a beautiful piece from the Have a Seat exhibit. The artist describes it as representing dance and movement which is comes across to the viewer. The chairs look like people dancing and swaying.

The Sea by Federico Herrero is energetic. He captures the energy of the ocean by using bright colors. The sea is untamed and beautiful which Herrero captured in the painting.
