The yarn hanging down from the plexiglass looks like rain to me confirming my interpretation of a stormy cloud. The title could also suggest that this is a depiction of grief or loss of someone and the gloomy mood conveys this sadness.

I wonder if Picasso's Blue Period was an influence for the Explosive Waves of Blue Emotions series because of how melancholy his Blue Period paintings are. Both of these artists take a deeper look into emotions and how they can e expressed through shades of blue.

The colors on the ceramic are blended and overlapping yet have defined spaces. The brown coloring at the top of the piece has a defined almost diagonal line dividing the green and red/orange used.

“Portal Creatures” is another piece of Penton’s series of ceramics displayed together. The stature of this creature is strong and sturdy. I wonder why Penton chose the colors he did because I enjoyed the bright hues.

I enjoyed that these galleries displayed each artists works together next to each other. This gave me a chance to admire the progression of the artists pieces or a series that they created. I think this is valuable to the viewer because the changing styles of artists is right there.

“Portal Plants” by Luke Penton is a realistic ceramic of plants. The detail of succulents is what drew to this piece. It feels as though your are looking at nature that was brought into be exhibited not a man made ceramic.

The label on this piece says it is from the series Explosive Waves of Blue Emotions. I like when an artist experiments with a color deeper like Elgarat did by using just blue for her series. Blue can be such an expressive color so it is a great choice for exploring emotions with.

I enjoyed this piece a lot because of the encaustic on canvas and the color scheme. The layering of paint added texture to the piece of cloth draped over the body in the piece. It made the art come alive off the canvas.

“Unexplained Passion” by Danielle Anne-Marie Elgarat reminds me traditional female depiction in art. Referencing the Greek goddesses and draped cloth.

We discussed the definition of contemporary art a lot earlier in this class. The artwork displayed in the Victoria Myhren Art and the Davis Art Galleries are the definition of contemporary. Many of the pieces were created this year, 2024, or in the last few months of 2023.

“Remembrance of You” by Adailia Nanilei Lorson reminds me of a stormy cloud. The dark purple color of the plexiglass and the colors of the yarn gave the sense of gloom. The gloomy mood and use of yarn are contradictory since yarn is often representing childhood.

It reminds me of the family trees we made in elementary school. I'm very close with my family so this piece spoke to me and had me thinking of my family members across the country. When I spend time at my grandmother's I spend a lot of time looking through her photo albums.

I assume the largest frame at the top of the tree is the family matriarch. I appreciate the difference of size in this frame because it suggests that she is the head of the family or beginning of the family tree.

“Branch, Bud, Blossom” by Syd Lee appears to be a physical family tree. It is beautifully decorated with different shades of pink and the blossoming flowers and picture frames.

As I looked at this piece, I evaluated my own phone use/screen time and I was alarmed. I appreciate time away from my phone and Hansen's work reminded me to make this a priority everyday.

My mom always jokes with my siblings and I that are phones are glued to our hands but this is a better representation. As I am typing this post, my phone is literally right next to me. As a generation our phones are always by our side.

“Intellectual Fission” by Theo Hansen was a jarring and honest piece for me. It is a great representation of our generation and growing up in the age of technology.

The intricacy of this artwork is so impressive. At first, I was taken aback by this being made with only pen and ink but after looking at it, I couldn't imagine being able to make it with any other medium. I also appreciated the addition of cobblestone roads.

“English Dreamscape” by Emily Domagala was one of my favorite pieces. It reminds me of what people imagine about London, England. Before I visited, I believed that everything looked like this work.

The things I love about this collection and oceans is general is that the ocean is all connected yet, so individual in all the locations. I think this translates well to people. We are all human and share many characteristics yet we're all individual and unique.

This installation at the DAM only shows 15 seas of this full piece of work. The other 35 seas are at other galleries around the world. I wonder why these 15 seas were chosen for this installation and what other places were visited white Lehanneur created these.

I also like this plate because the darkness of the blue shows how vast and threatening the Northern Sea can be. When people are sailing up there, there is nothing but this ocean for miles. It is calming and haunting at the same time.

Alternatively, one of the lightest colors shown in this piece is 'Sea 33' from the Caspian Sea, Atyrau, Kazakhstan. The Caspian Sea is in a part of the world that receives a ton of sunlight and is known for its light blue water.

The color representation is best seen in 'Sea 13' which is the the plate in the top right corner. This is the sea in Hudson Bay, Belcher Islands, Canada. The color is so dark as it is seen when visiting a place so northern and depending on the time of year doesn't get a lot of sun.
