13. To close, it was a remarkable experience. I discovered a microcosmos of talented and enthusiast professionals from other parts of the world who are eager to learn and ultimately improve the way they report their findings in order to help clinicians better use the information to treat patients

12. New stain. Carlos generously brought me a new stain for my lab: the Sternheimer (S) stain, not to be confused with the Sternheimer-Malbin (SM) stain. Within a distinct color pattern, the S stain offers better visualization of nuclei (blue) respect to cytoplasm (red). I’m already enjoying it

11. Another highlight was to meet (Ana Paula Franz and Carlos Martinez-F) for the first time 2 of our coauthors of our transcontinental collaboration to describe for the first time the clinical phenotype associated with vacuolar casts in the #UrinarySediment pdfs.journals.lww.com/kidney360/20...

10. Education. As I mentioned, I learned a lot during the 3 days. Here is just a snapshot of that. Presentations by Dr Fogazzi on spheroplasts and by MT Fiorella Anguilleri on Fabry mulberry bodies

9. High volume labs continue to depend on automated analyzers. It was great to see that this industry is thriving. I expect major advances with the rise of AI. But it comes down to quality of image acquisition. AI can only be as good as the info fed into it

8. Collaborative mindset. In LatinAmerica, lab professionals in charge of urinalysis earn various degrees: Medical Technologists, Chemists/Biologists, etc.; very talented people genuinely interested in learning from clinicians, as much as I am in learning from them. Something to learn 4 us here in 🇺🇸

7. Personal level. Beyond his talent and expertise, I met an extraordinary man. Humble, altruistic, wise, friendly, and with a great sense of humor. I brought him a vacuolar cast tie as a present and he wore it proudly right away 🤩

6. Prof. Fogazzi. Definitely a big highlight for me was to meet for the 1st time Dr Giovanni Fogazzi, an icon in the field. Still remember when I bought his book early in my career. One my fave pics is this one that captured a moment when he stood up to ask a ? after my talk. Very cool. #BigFan

5. I was also asked to present on “rare casts”. Who would think that I would get a chance to talk about vacuolar casts, bacterial pseudo casts and other unusual casts for an hour, the Q&A was lively!

4. The meeting: the agenda included presentations tailored to standardization of urinalysis from the laboratory medicine perspective as well as some with clinical context. On day 2, I was asked to present on nephrologist’s approach to #UrineMicroscopy
November 21, 2025 at 5:24 PM
3. Resourcefulness: one of the specimens was loaded with these amazing cholesterol crystals. Note that the colorful aspect was generated by “home-made” polarizer, resourcesfulness 101

2. Hands-on pre-course. We started with demonstration of microscope techniques, stains and #UrinarySediment structure identification. The organizers brought great specimens, even one containing vacuolar casts!
November 21, 2025 at 5:24 PM
1. Engagement: the auditorium was full throughout the meeting. Lectures started at 8 am and ended at 7 pm. Nobody left their seat. Quite remarkable. Aside from the live attendance, there were ~250 virtual participants.

1/n Recently attended an international congress about Urinalysis in Santiago, Chile 🇨🇱. I was expecting a small meeting. I was wrong. Pleasantly surprised with the size of the meeting and the energy and interest from the participants. Let me share the highlights of my experience:
