I live by this and try to adapt the requirements of university education to this outlook on what it truly means to learn and to educate. I think it is possible to do so even in times of increasing market competition, decreasing funding & time constraints

I also love the analogy of the teacher as gardener, of course, being one myself. 🌱 The excerpt is from Satish Kumar and Pavel Cenkl’s “Transformative Learning”. I was fortunate to meet Satish - previously a Jain monk - at Schumacher College (Devonshire) many years ago. What an inspiring teacher 🙏🏼

When has America not been a (war) torn, destitute country? Everyone is still in complete denial - I’ve asked myself before, I’m asking myself now: do those who continue saying “This is not who we are!” just have a very strong adherence to values or are they simply in denial?
It’s going to get worse.

This is out of hand. These agents are there to cause trouble and violence, not to keep people safe. These are the scenes that play out in war torn, destitute countries - not America.

Ich nehme keine DoktorandInnen an, wenn die Finanzierung nicht gesichert ist, also entweder habe ich eine Stelle oder die Kandidatin hat Drittmittel eingeworben. Das ist für manche hart oder unverständlich, aber man kann ohne Finanzierung nicht promovieren.

Hört sich für mich so an als wollten sie kein Machtvakuum entstehen lassen - ob das rechtlich abgedeckt ist weiß ich nicht und auch nicht, was passieren würde, wenn man sich „außerplanmäßig“ jetzt doch auf irgendwas einigen würde.

I gave a talk recently about world-making in Hannah Arendt’s sense. It inspired a pro-Palestine student to continue their struggle and it emboldened a colleague to accept an invitation to a university in Israel.
What I learned: I can be very clear in what I say, but I can’t control what others hear.
