In general I think it's hard to combat scientific misinformation when some of the best research is locked behind an academic paywall, while lots of nonsense gets published free for everyone to read in predatory journals.

Eens! Net lid geworden.

Writing separately, but, I'd like to share a brief honest reflection on the experience of writing our paper on climate change health impact attribution, which is to date probably the hardest and most frustrating project of 100+ I've published in 15 years as a scientist.

J. D. Bernal in 1939 discussing how graduate students (only a thing from 1917 in the UK) are evaluated based on number and bulk, the publication pressure stifling originality, and filling the literature with useless papers.

Really nice to visit #GreenKayak during our stay in Bergen, Norway. Quite valuable trash in the Fjord. A great day to paddle and to be useful for cleaner oceans.

“In their analysis, the researchers excluded the last birth of each woman to reduce the influence of parental choice — for instance, some people choose to stop having children once they have both boys and girls.”

Any analysis conditioning on number of children suffers from accumulation bias.

Given the importance of the topic, we might have pursued a journal with greater notoriety—but we prioritized BMC Medicine for its rigorous publication standards, as it is one of the few general medical journals—if not the only one—to offer registered reports.

Excellent! Journals should implement and test these tools as soon as possible! (While I don’t mind checking a clinical trial registration when reviewing, I can understand reviewers that do since I get annoyed when asked to check with a reporting guideline (which is boring).)

Introducing RegCheck: a tool which uses Large Language Models to automatically compare preregistered protocols with their corresponding published papers and highlights deviations.

Very interesting! I only recently found out that ‘biostatistician’ and ‘statistician’ mean very different things in practice, with the former expected to be experienced in data analysis while that is ambiguous for the latter. Does ‘mathematical biostatistics’ even exist?

We also highlight nice collaborative features of the ALL-IN approach, like working bottom-up and preventing filedrawering, in our V2 of the paper:

Very happy to have shared this project with the Open Science Community Amsterdam!

Here is the story of why I nominated for OSCAward.

A successful project that looks like a failure. Even with knowledge of how it turned out, I would do everything exactly the same

while these journals still have very little editorial checks in place to compare reporting to prespecified protocol, let alone take responsibility and implement registered reports format for clinical trials.

Admirable effort by Mark Bolland, Alison Avenell and Andrew Grey to correct the literature.

I would like a website to exist that automatically logs these journal screw-ups to counteract the ‘hearsay prestige’ that medical researchers attribute to jour that respond poorly to correction efforts[1/2]

“What happens if the […] is wrong?”

Why should question change the excitement about the sleuthing initiative?

Insert [closed door peer review] or [university press release]. Many scientists simply accept that. Or try to improve.

Those excited now will probably also help improve in the future.

This thinking did start an excellent new research field on game-theoretic inference with e-values. I think future developments will probe you wrong ;). Check out section 9 ‘Could Fisher, Jeffreys, and Neyman have agreed on a currency for testing’ of the 2024 Safe testing RSS paper.
