For my novel "Dancing in the Purple Rain", it's sort of obvious what my main character's theme song is. However, for most of my novels, their theme song would be REM's "It's the End of the World." (Yeah, I take too much pleasure in torturing my characters.) #WritingLifeMonthly #BookSky #WriteSky

I would fall into chaotic good, lawful neutral, or true neutral depending on whether I'm reading a paper book or my ebook... and where I was when I started reading said book. I've been known to use a gum wrapper as a bookmark, because I couldn't find my fancy ones. #BookSky #AmReading

Just like yesterday's question, this depends on the manuscript and how long I've been working on it. But for every manuscript, when I'm "done" with writing and editing, I feel a moment of loss and confusion, not really sure what I should be doing next. #writingLifeMonthly #WriteSky #WritingCommunity

My answer to this question will depend on the manuscript and how long I've been working on it. I normally like the drafting and the research the most, but there is a certain joy to the editing and getting it ready to share with others. But editing is my day job, so... #WritingLifeMonthly #WriteSky

I'd like to have as a friend the main character from my next novel to be released. She knows how to "kick serious ass". Zombie apocalypse comes, and I'd be protected! That is assuming that she doesn't tie me up to be zombie food, just because I'm so mean to her. #WritingLifeMonthly #AmWriting

Fear manifests in many ways, and all of them find my writing in some fashion. I write thrillers, so fear is often a core emotion that at least one of the characters feels. Fear comes from uncertainty. If you were certain of the outcome, calmness comes instead. #PretendPanel #AmWriting #WriteSky

Is it wrong for me to admit that I would never want to be turned into one of my characters, even for a day? Their author takes too much pleasure in torturing them and making their lives a living hell. 😇🤣

Nothing is "scary" for me to write. The story tells me what is needed, and I write it. However, there are certain ideas and concepts that I'm nervous about releasing to the world... uncertain of the backlash. That said, as I get older, I seem to care less about what others think.

It's not common for people to see my office from this view. They often see my shelves behind me, not the desk, with all the knick-knacks & the two massive monitors. But the home office is MY space. And I need those monitors for editing.

I'll admit that I didn't like "The Night Circus." I wanted to like it, but felt disconnected. That said, it was because of the beautiful writing from Erin Morgenstern that made me realize WHY I don't like omniscient voice. Many books using that voice poorly execute it, but not "The Night Circus."

One of my fav series is the "Lady Astronaut" series by @maryrobinettekowal.com I have ebook, audio & print of all books in the series, I love it that much.

So... What other books do people suggest I read?

My big goal for October is to "write, write & write some more." I won't put a word count on it, because I'm diving into a manuscript that already has 50k words, but no idea how much of that 50k needs to be rewritten. But I'll be #writing by the end of the month. #WritingLifeMonthly #WriteSky

I hear this a lot — that if you don’t earn out your advance the publisher still can profit. But usually ppl don’t take into account a huge host of factors. Did the publisher *print* 50k but It sold 2k? That’s a huge printing bill.
lindaholmes.bsky.social
Yep. Your book can be (very) profitable even if you never earn out your advance.

(Say I offer you $5 a day for a week to make what I estimate will be $350, because we agree 10% of what I expect to make is fair. I give you $35 in advance, but then I only make $250. Doesn’t mean I lost money.)
lilithsaintcrow.com
One thing this article doesn't cover is that most books don't "earn out" their advances, true--but that the magic of publisher accounting is a large component of why that's so, and an author not earning out does NOT mean the publisher didn't profit extensively.

Far from.
