It's a more of a rocket movie with a side dish of coal mining. But Chris Cooper's character is very, very into coal mining.

October Sky is definitely the second-best movie about coal mining starring Chris Cooper.

Can I make this episode about a nice but somewhat forgettable movie a discussion about MATEWAN? I sure tried!

Yes, the frailty is the key. I just reread The Mirror Crack’d, and there’s a lot of really moving stuff about her fears of aging. For me, the Rutherford and Lansbury portrayals have their charms even if they’re not that accurate. Love a spinster absolutely smoking men who underestimate her.

She's so good. IIRC, she was in one of the Margaret Rutherford Marples when she was young, and Rutherford told her that she'd be a great Marple one day.

*Love* that one. Don't know if you've seen the Joan Hickson Marples, but I thought that one was a particularly good adaptation.

Every three months or so, The Guardian has a story about a cheese heist.

RIP Patricia Routledge. Hard to think of a more fully realized, deftly executed comic character than Hyacinth Bou-quet. Or one that brought me more joy as a child. Very jealous of my parents, who saw her as Lady Bracknell. Also, Snoop Dogg is a big fan of Keeping Up Appearances.

I need you all to know that a "small beer" is what Margaret Rutherford's Miss Marple treats herself to after a hard day of sleuthing, and I vehemently insist that is what PTA is referencing.

My sense is that Branagh is riffing off the Ustinov Poirot and he just can’t stop himself.

I’ve been meaning to read that one for a while…

And Nixon was also a notorious anti-Semite!

Also the best on-screen portrayer of Richard Nixon, as discussed on @1999thepodcast.bsky.social

#DYK? Dan Hedaya, who played Cher's Dad Mel Horowitz is 85 years old, has been acting for a half-century, and is on record saying CLUELESS is his favorite movie role of them all.

We are watching CLUELESS today, dir by Amy Heckerling as part of our BREAK THE FRAME FILM FESTIVAL #BTFF

Doing it Wednesday night! Will be really interested to hear what you think the differences are.

Why are we spending so many of our precious Hollywood resources on overpriced episodes of Celebrity Lip Sync Battle

I don't want to write off all biopics, but I'm getting so bored of "Watch the famous person do a good impression of another famous person."

The Marple-Fletcher convergence.

That’s a movie I’ve been really curious to revisit.

Today’s nice little surprise: seeing a young Andre Royo sitting silently and pensively as part of a courtroom audience in a vintage Law & Order episode.

One of my first Brutcom loves. Probably warped my development in some troubling ways…
