For those who wonder what a modern postal service could look like, one example is in France, where letter carriers provide check-ins on the elderly for very affordable rates, while completing their routes.

I encourage everyone to read the whole thing

Funny you mention that. Take a look at this website made by the CUPW union which outlines some of their ideas for a modern postal service: www.deliveringcommunitypower.ca

Sadly, this isn’t even being talked about in the negotiations because #CanadaPost won’t even agree to basic job protections.

Thanks for adding your perspective! I agree, it is so sad what our neoliberal politicians have allowed to happen to our postal service & other public institutions. From your perspective, what policy changes would you suggest to get from where we are now to where we want to be?
juliennedanvers.bsky.social
Absolutely, and that’s the case here, too. But the point is that it’s a formalized program providing an additional income stream, and posties will pop in for a half hour for a cup of tea etc. I encourage you to read the full article.
juliennedanvers.bsky.social
Absolutely! The sky’s the limit on services we can offer in the public interest 🙌
juliennedanvers.bsky.social
Precisely!!! We will lose in a race to the bottom! But that doesn’t mean we cannot adapt our valuable public services for the modern era.
juliennedanvers.bsky.social
This, in fact, is not America. It’s Canada, where we do not worry about getting shot in our daily lives. Hope that helps.

If you don’t care to comment with relevant points for the current discussion (the Canadian postal service), kindly refrain from commenting at all ✌️

You get it !!! I cannot believe the number of people in my comments that completely miss the point.

"In some places, French postal workers now pick up prescriptions, return library books, and deliver flowers. Last year, only twenty eight per cent of La Poste’s revenue came from sending mail."

Services can evolve in positive ways to meet new and growing needs.

This article is an example of what a public postal service adapted for the needs of a modern era could look like; it is not a prescription for what we must exactly do here in Canada.
juliennedanvers.bsky.social
Yes, our public institutions must adapt to modern times. I invite you to take a look at the article linked below for an example of what a modern postal service could look like. Yesterday’s announcement is not about “transformation”, it is a step towards privatization.

It’s absolutely right that workers walk off the job in response to the government taking a chainsaw to Canada Post.

If we lose the unique national infrastructure the postal service has, it will never be rebuilt. We should be using it to expand services to the public, not nickel and diming it.

Yes, our public services must change to adapt to modern times. This is not adaptation or innovation, it is a giant step towards dismantling our public postal service - forever.

For those who say “it would never work here!” the article describes how the postal service in France was facing decreases in lettermail (like here) & budgetary pressures. This program is an innovative way to modernize the system while adding a new income stream. Privatization is NOT the only option!

The mail shouldn't make money, it is a service like hospitals and roads and the armed forces.
juliennedanvers.bsky.social
Even the CBC framing on this news is shameful. They take as fact that the corporation’s money woes are inevitable & this “transformation” is needed & necessary when nothing could be further from the truth.

Yes, our institutions need to CHANGE with the times, but this isn’t it 😤

The government is reducing service standards and Canada Post’s biggest advantage: its nationwide network.

This plan is about cutting back the postal service instead of investing to give it new revenue tools through things like postal banking. It’s shameful.

Make no mistake, this is a giant step towards complete privatization of our postal service.

We could have pride in our vital public institutions & build them up to meet our modern needs. But no, instead, our “liberal” gov’t would prefer to be conservatives.
