It's been a long time since I've been on a podcast. I think this one, Ask the Patient Advocate with Dr. Elena Borrelli, has some interesting tidbits in it, particularly toward the end when I was asked about sources of hope. shows.acast.com/660d7e37088d...

Pretty darn cool to get a shoutout from @billmckibben, one of my heroes! billmckibben.substack.com/p/the-stupid.... This is for my piece on how a dying coal plant sparked New Mexico's ambitious climate law — and created a blueprint other states can follow. jrehmeyer.substack.com/p/how-a-dyin...

It seemed impossible: New Mexico — poor, bluish-purple, oil-and-gas-heavy — passed a clean energy law more ambitious than almost any other state had achieved. Not only that, it did so with broad bipartisan support. The catalyst? A dying coal plant.

And remember it’s not too late to buy one for an incredible price before the tax credits end — as little as $12K for an Ioniq 5. See more details here: jrehmeyer.substack.com/p/go-buy-an-ev

All of those statements are completely heartfelt, and I was thinking of saying them already — but if you buy the argument in this link, they might also be leading supercharging EV sales in the long run even though the tax credits are expiring. May it be! l.facebook.com/l.php?u=http...

We’ve had Evie the EV now for almost a week — and wow we really love her, even more than I expected. What I didn’t anticipate was how significant the smoothness and quiet would be. It feels like you’re just gliding along. John and I enthuse to one another each time we drive her.

I wrote about the wonderful op-ed by Walter Sterling, president of St. John's College, about what the heck colleges should do in the age of AI — but I forgot to provide an audio version! Bad me. I fixed that here: jrehmeyer.substack.com/p/a-hodge-po...
So What the Heck Are Colleges Supposed to Do in the Age of AI?

Remember that the federal $7500 rebate is going away on September 30. Who knows what will happen with prices after that, but if you want an EV (and see my post for the reasons that you may well), this is a really good time to act. open.substack.com/pub/jrehmeye...

To find the manufacturer’s discounts on various models of EVs, go to www.edmunds.com/.../tax-cred....

julierehmeyer.bsky.social
That’s if you’re a PNM customer in NM, but even if your state and utility offer no rebates, it’s still a steal at $19,100.

I found two tools to help. To locate all the rebates you might be eligible for, go to www.electricforall.org/rebates-ince... and enter your zip code.
EV Incentives - Electric For All
View vehicle tax credits & rebates, charging station incentives, local utilities electricity discounts & special driving perks available in your area.

One example: After the $15,000 manufacturer’s discount, the $7500 federal rebate (expiring Sept 30), the $3000 NM state rebate, and the $4000 PNM (local utility) rebate, you can buy the base model Ioniq 5 for $12,100!

There are some incredible deals available on EVs right now — but bizarrely, it’s not so easy to find them. I can’t understand why dealers aren’t trumpeting this to the heavens.

Go buy an EV! We just bought one that was cheaper than gas, and some are MUCH cheaper. Plus they're just better — quiet, clean, safe, fun to drive, and cheaper to own. But the $7500 federal tax rebate ends Sept 30, so you gotta get going.

Now that AI can churn out a term paper in seconds, how should colleges respond? My latest piece in The Weighing wrestles with that question, in dialogue with Walter Sterling’s new op-ed. jrehmeyer.substack.com/p/so-what-th...

“That brings an intellectual fearlessness. When I started working in AI, I didn’t really know anything about AI. I prepared for my interview by reading for a couple of weeks. That fearlessness is the greatest gift of the education.” Many alums echo this belief regardless of the fields they go into.

Carla Echevarria, a 1996 alumna of St. John’s and now a senior manager of user experience at Google DeepMind, says she'd “struggle with Schrödinger in senior lab and then bang my head against Hegel for a couple of hours and then weep in the library while listening to ‘Tristan und Isolde.’
julierehmeyer.bsky.social
What the heck are colleges supposed to do now that AI is undermining the foundations of education? Walter Sterling, president of my alma mater and former employer St. John's College, has an answer.
