In one terrible example, Union Carbide hired from 1930 to 1935 nearly three thousand workers-mostly African Americans-to dig a tunnel through a mountain of quartz at Hawk's Nest in West Virginia to divert a river for hydroelectric power. The workers drilled through quartz, creating clouds of silica dust, but weren't given masks or respirators, although the white engineers and managers who inspected the work always wore protection.
As many as one thousand of the tunnelers died of silicosis, the lung disease that results from breathing too much silica. The intake was so severe that some miners died on their feet; others were dead within a few weeks of starting work. Even after the death toll rose to shocking levels, Union Carbide did nothing to protect its employees.
To conceal the scope of the tragedy, the company buried many of the bodies in secret cemeteries nearby.
The worst industrial disaster in American history, Hawk's Nest demonstrated for the first time that intense exposure to some kinds of rock dust can kill within days. Those who worked with talc— including tire workers and millers- got sick, too. Studies published in 1942 and 1955 documented high levels of this disabling and fatal lung disease-talcosis-among tale workers.

It's weird they sorta seemed to think they could put posters in their places by posting worse themselves, so they just reminded us they can ban you for anything if they want.

Yeah it means they were bullshitting about Signal and the ToS but we knew that wasn't ever important.

i think it is fair to request a statement from @jay.bsky.team on TRANS PEOPLE and where we fit in on @bsky.app.

i think as a transgender journalist, it's acceptable and makes sense for me to ask this

and so, the question, am i not a person as a trans girl and do i not deserve to feel safe here?

Link was a pretty well known quantity and there wasn't a changing of the guards in management to the point where they didn't know who was on here since early on. Staff used to post a lot more frequently until they did a heel turn.

So I honestly think Link got got to make an example.
