<div class="field field-field-text"><p>Overnight Israeli attacks on al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City have rendered it out of service. It was the last functioning hospital in northern Gaza.</p>
<p>Missiles hit the hospital's main reception building, damaging or destroying essential departments such as the emergency care ward, laboratory and pharmacy, Wafa news agency reported.</p>
<p>Eyewitnesses say the military threatened to bomb the hospital just minutes before the strikes, giving those in its compounds only 18 minutes to evacuate.</p>
<p>Due to the rushed expulsion, critically ill patients were evacuated out in the cold without proper care. At least three patients - including a child being treated for head injuries - died as a result.</p>
<p>The Israeli army and Shin Bet internal intelligence agency later claimed, without providing evidence, that they had targeted a Hamas “command and control complex” within the hospital.</p>

<div class="field field-field-text"><p>Two decades ago, <a href="https://www.middleeasteye.net/countries/russia" target="_blank">Russian</a> American anthropologist Alexei Yurchak coined the term “hypernormalisation” to describe the absurd and surreal reality of the Soviet Union during its final two decades. </p>
<p>In that era, both citizens and officials knew the Soviet system was dysfunctional and no longer reflected reality - yet everyone continued as if nothing was wrong. </p>
<p>Few could have imagined that the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-50013048" target="_blank">Berlin Wall</a> would collapse, or that the mighty Soviet Union would disintegrate into <a href="https://www.britannica.com/event/the-collapse-of-the-Soviet-Union" target="_blank">15 independent states</a>, with Russia relying on <a href="https://www.middleeasteye.net/countries/us" target="_blank">US</a> wheat imports in the 1990s.</p>
<p>Looking back, it’s easy to identify the broken parts of that system and understand just how surreal and unsustainable - what Yurchak framed as hypernormalised - it truly was. </p>
<p>Now, consider this: <a href="https://www.middleeasteye.net/opinion/gaza-medic-killings-how-voice-beyond-grave-destroyed-israels-lie" target="_blank">15 medics and rescue workers</a> were recently executed by the <a href="https://www.middleeasteye.net/countries/israel" target="_blank">Israeli</a> army in Gaza, and after one captured the moment on video - refuting the Israeli army’s official narrative - the world is asking questions. </p>

It's fine to argue that Reconstruction didn't go far enough, but make sure to place it in historical context. Five years before the end of the war the Dred Scott ruling was law of the land. Few white Americans in 1860 could have anticipated the end of slavery and freedom for four million Americans.🗃️
