Republicans can’t win on their policies, so they are trying to dodge accountability by rewriting the rules. These lawmakers are going out of their way to silence the will of the people and deliberately undermine our democracy.

File this in the "systematic problems with immigration law" box. The Victorian-era "Crimes involving moral turpitude" concept has been part of US immigration law for over a century, and it holds that any fraud crime (including passing a $25 bad check) can be grounds for deportation or exclusion.
