What are some academic superpowers you’ve come to appreciate? I’m open to constantly learning, adapting, and improving. I’m so lucky to have days where I spend so much energy thinking and learning that I am totally spent at the end.

I’ve also always appreciated that intellectual rigour and thoroughness in thought as important qualities of scholarship, but I have really underestimated the importance of creativity and imagination. Some of the best research is imaginative and speculative, seeing beyond what we currently know.

Increasingly, I’m recognising my own limits as a researcher in terms of subject matter expertise. I can’t be an expert in all things! But I’m also increasingly recognising my strengths in identifying key expertise, inviting experts to work with me, and best ways of working together.

Every interaction between the individual and the institutions of the state — births, education, taxes, justice, social support, death — produces data that shows what a society values and how it executes the social contract. This data can be used to uplift or to harm as an exercise in state power.

Absolutely buzzing from this morning’s keynotes at #ADRUKConf25! I am awestruck by the points made by Tom Emery from @odissei.bsky.social, especially understanding administrative data as the connective tissue between individuals and the state, the evidence of the social contract.

I don’t think it can be emphasized enough that large language models were never intended to do math or know facts; literally all they do is attempt to sound like the text they’re given, which may or may not include math or facts. They don’t do logic or fact checking — they’re just not built for that
