Potential effects of heat index
As described above, the heat index is the temperature equivalent perceived by humans as a result of air temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed. This temperature can have potentially severe medical effects. Under high air temperature and humidity (high heat index) conditions, perspiration is hindered due to reduced evaporation as a result of high humidity. Sweat is the human body's physiological response to high temperatures, and is an attempt to lower body temperature through the evaporation of sweat. When this is hindered, overheating and dehydration can occur, with varying severity. Note that exposure to full sunshine can increase heat index values by up to 14°F.

Heat index values are particularly important for children. Young children are generally in more danger due to factors including larger skin surface relative to their small bodies, higher heat production as a result of exercise, and typically sweating less than adults. Also, children are often less aware than adults of the need to rest and re-hydrate.

Thirst is a late sign of dehydration, and it is important to remain hydrated, particularly before, during, and after outdoor activities, especially those involving heavy physical exertion. In addition to children, people with certain conditions, including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cystic fibrosis, and mental retardation are at greater risk of overheating and dehydration.

By now, you've certainly seen some of the powerful (and oftentimes horrifying) images coming out of the anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles.

In the face of continued ICE raids, escalation by law enforcement, and displays of police violence at protests, the people of LA continue to show up to defend the immigrant communities that truly define the city. One protester in particular has gone ultra-viral for his brave confrontation of a group of California National Guard officers stationed outside the Los Angeles VA Clinic. The clinic is part of the complex that houses the LA Federal Building and the Metropolitan Detention Center, one of the focal points of the protests.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who is against President Trump's deployment of the National Guard to the city, said that the troops are only protecting federal property. "They're guarding the federal building here in downtown, and they're guarding the federal building in Westwood. That's what they're doing," she said at a news conference.

The original video alone has been viewed over 350,000 times, but it's been reposted by countless news outlets and social media users. COURIER posted it to their TikTok, where it currently has 3.4 million likes and a staggering 18 million views (and counting).

As you can probably imagine, people were moved by the protester's courage and powerful words.

Kristi Noem Targets “Marriage Fraud” — Pushes DHS Hotline To Report Separate Bedrooms

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, an agency of the Department of Homeland Security, shared a photo on X this week of a State Trooper escorting a handcuffed woman.

The caption reads: “Marriage fraud is a federal crime. There will not be a happily ever after for this illegal alien who was ordered removed from the U.S. 14 years ago due to marriage fraud. She was taken into custody at our Orlando office by @ICEgov and our @FHPOrlando partners. Under @POTUS and @Sec_Noem, there are consequences for breaking immigration law.”

DHS reshared the photo and added a Homeland Security phone number for people to “report marriage fraud.”

The DHS agency’s X account is being inundated by MAGA supporters who are all reporting the same “tip,” suggesting that they pursue U.S. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-MI) and asserting she married her brother to help get him U.S. citizenship. (Omar has offered explanations to debunk the narrative about her second husband, a British citizen, saying: “Insinuations that Ahmed Nur Said Elmi is my brother are absurd and offensive.”)

As the Department of Justice explains, “The typical fact pattern in marriage fraud cases is that a U.S. citizen and an alien get married. They fulfill all state law requirements such as medical tests, licensing, and a ceremony. But the U.S. citizen is paid to marry the alien in order to entitle the alien to obtain status as a permanent resident of the United States; the parties do not intend to live together as man and wife.”

Some commenters, decidedly not among the MAGA cohort exhorting DHS to investigate Omar, are suggesting snarkily that First Lady Melania Trump‘s status be investigated.

Already a holder of a coveted EB-1 Visa — known as the “Einstein Visa” for being contingent on extraordinary achievement — Ms. Trump became a U.S. citizen in 2006 after marrying Donald Trump in 2005.

The snark in the suggestion derives from the “Where’s Melania?” meme, with its implicit suggestion that the Trumps do not, as the “marriage fraud” law requires, “live together as man and wife.”

NOTE: DHS has set a target of apprehending 3,000 undocumented or illegal migrants per day in the U.S., a goal that is forcing ICE agents to go beyond targeting migrants guilty of criminal activity, a group that was the stated original target of the Trump administration. A compensating rallying cry among MAGA supporters of Trump’s more sweeping deportation efforts is the claim that any undocumented migrant is a criminal, having committed the crime of being undocumented — or “illegal.” An acute focus on marriage fraud further expands the deportation target base.

What's Undetermined:
The claim originated from Louisiana state Rep. Patricia Moore’s mention of a pregnant 9-year-old girl in her district. She did not provide additional details, and we were unable to independently confirm the existence or circumstances of the case

In short, the claim was a mixture of true, false and undetermined information.

Namely, the bill would have allowed young rape victims to terminate their pregnancies. However, the proposed legislation did not reference any specific case of a pregnant 9-year-old. The claim stemmed from a statement by Moore, who said she was aware of a 9-year-old girl in her district who had become pregnant

We were unable to independently verify the existence or circumstances of the child mentioned. We reached out to Moore to request more details about the case of the pregnant 9-year-old & will update this story if and when we hear back.

Louisiana abortion law and the recent bill on exceptions
Louisiana's abortion ban took effect in 2022 following the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. That decision eliminated federal protections for abortion & allowed individual states to set their own laws. Under the state's law, abortion is banned except in limited cases such as when the pregnant woman's life is at serious risk, the fetus is "medically futile" or in cases of ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage. There is currently no exception for rape or incest

The in-question legislation was Democratic state Rep. Delisha Boyd's 3rd attempt to create exceptions to Louisiana's abortion law. The proposed bill aimed to allow abortions for victims under 17 who became pregnant as a result of specific offenses such as rape or sexual battery that, if committed against a minor, would make an abortion legal in those cases. The bill said the victim wouldn't need to provide a police report, forensic evidence or proof that someone was being prosecuted for the crime in order to get the abortion

Moore stated that she was "aware of a 9 year old, in [her] area, pregnant" and she was struggling to reconcile her feelings about the case with her religious beliefs. Moore also added that her mother was raped at the age of 13 and had her at 14. "So I do struggle with it. I know we got to protect our children, but this point right now, I cannot vote yes,"

Boyd, who authored the bill, also mentioned she was aware of a "Louisiana girl who was raped and gave birth at 13 and a 9-year-old girl who became pregnant after being sexually assaulted."

:while it's true that Louisiana lawmakers rejected a bill that would have allowed abortion in cases of child rape, there was no confirmed evidence that the decision directly affected a specific 9-year-old. Moore mentioned being aware of a case during the hearing but provided no details, and we were unable to independently verify the claim. As of this writing, Louisiana abortion law does not include an exception for rape or incest.

ICE agents target SoCal church after 'hearing Spanish speaking women in parking lot'

Federal agents conducted immigration-related abductions near two churches in the Downey neighborhood of Los Angeles Wednesday amid city protests against ICE raids that have captured global attention.

The ICE agents made arrests at the Home Depot, L.A. Fitness, near the Our Lady of Perpetual Help church and at the Downey Memorial Christian Church, according to Councilmember Mario Trujillo. Downey city and faith leaders denounced the raids, which were performed by several agents wearing face coverings, displaying police insignias and refusing to give their names.

An elderly man dropping his granddaughter off at Our Lady of Perpetual Help's school was detained on the sidewalk in front of the church's property. Another man outside Downey Memorial Christian Church was surrounded and arrested by immigration officers, Pastor Alfredo Lopez said.

Downey faith leaders have joined more than 30 Southern California mayors in calling for an end to immigration raids.
The pastor joined Senior Pastor Tanya Lopez and other community members in confronting the agents and repeatedly asking for their information, he said during a press conference. The agents refused to give their names and denied orders to leave the church parking lot.

"When we said that we don’t want this in our property, this gentleman just shouted again, 'whole country is their property,'" Alfredo Lopez said. "When someone tells that to you with a weapon in their hands and in their body, that was a very clear message. And as a man of faith, that is not allowed and that is not correct and that stands against everything that our country stands for."

Churches have typically been designated as safe zones from immigration raids and other law enforcement operations. However, the designation is more of a courtesy than a legal obligation. “Legally speaking ICE agents can go into the public spaces of churches, mosques, places of worship,” Loyola University law professor Jessica Levinson told KTLA.

“The important distinction is whether or not you’re in a public place or a private place. In a public place, maybe it’s a parking lot, maybe it’s where you first enter a house of worship, then ICE agents can go and arrest people and they do not need warrants as long as they have probable cause.”

One Los Angeles pastor said an ICE agent pointed their rifle at her and told her to "get back."

Community member and witness Paulina told KTLA the agents were aggressive and had license plates on their vehicles from New Mexico and Texas. “The gentleman who they took was dark-skinned and only spoke Spanish,” she said. “They don’t care if you have papers, as long as you look like what they want you to look like, they’ll take you.” Tanya Lopez said one agent pointed their rifle at her and told her to "get back."

It is not clear how many were abducted during ICE operations on Wednesday. Downey Mayor Hector Sosa is among 30 Southern California mayors calling for the end of immigration operations. The raids are part of Trump's promise to crackdown on immigration, and "border czar" Stephen Miller's reported instructions for ICE to ramp up its daily arrests to 3,000.

“Our job as elected officials is public safety,” Trujillo said. “We would submit to you that these raids at Home Depots, restaurants, places of worship, or schools are not keeping our community safe. They are creating havoc and fear.”

Downey is located in the southeastern portion of Los Angeles county.
