Fatigue, of the inhuman wearing-down of what until now has been kept sacred and removed from slop: ideas, creativity, art. And given everything else that’s going on, it feels, to those of us who really value those intangibles, like a bridge too far, like a breaching of the final barriers.

So when people complain about AI slop, they’re sensing not just the uncanny valley effect, not just the threat of replacement, not just all the potential downsides—though they are also talking about those—there is, I think, a more fundamental sense at play: one of fatigue.

“AI Slop,” then, is this concept writ large, applied broadly to what remains of our shared reality. It’s the product of a machine that takes as its input ideas, images, video, &c., and outputs a mathematically optimized version of things that once were the sole domain of the human brain.
