* program (and probably more) 😬

That program is like a wish list come true, I love Peter Burke's books and connoisseurship is an interesting and important topic.

... just recently thought I'd like to read a book about him but couldn't find one (in the languages I'm able to read, that's a limiting factor, of course).

Reaktion Books has an exceptionally well made programm for spring/smmer 2026, I scroll through the PDF and cannot stop smiling. I'm particularly looking forward to these arthistorical books on Francisco de Zurbarán and Lorenzo Ghiberti in "Renaissance Lives" and "The Age of Sinan" 😍 I've ...

The thread of which the quoted posts are part of gives an overview that makes me want to listen to it immediately. I really know nothing, it seems:

I should definitely read a book about the history of the region around Gaza given how little I know. This series of the Empire Podcast is such a useful introduction if you know as "much" as I do:

OTTOMAN GAZA

Through gunpowder conquest, the Ottomans ruled over Gaza from the 1500s to the early 1900s. How did they shape the region?

... I didn't know she was a bookseller herself!

"Yeah, being a bookseller, I’m always confronting inspectors as they try to check my bookstore for illegal books, so it’s obvious that The Book Censor’s Library was inspired by those actual inspectors in my actual bookstore."
“[Literature is] a dance around silence, an attempt to get closer to what we are not saying”: A Conversation with Bothayna Al-Essa—Erik Noonan
Anglophone audiences first encountered the Kuwaiti novelist, publisher, and bookseller Bothanya Al-Essa through excerpts of her 2004 novel A Soundless Collision (trans. Chris Bredin), published in …

"The Book Censor's Library" by Bothayna al-Essa was a great read for me and it's so shockingly timely. I've read it a second time recently and found it even more pertinent for our times.
This interview was interesting because I don't know much about her, for example ...

📣 Germany's close to reversing its opposition to mass surveillance & private message scanning, & backing the Chat Control bill. This could end private comms-& Signal-in the EU.

Time's short and they're counting on obscurity: please let German politicians know how horrifying their reversal would be.

We are alarmed by reports that Germany is on the verge of a catastrophic about-face, reversing its longstanding and principled opposition to the EU’s Chat Control proposal which, if passed, could spell the end of the right to privacy in Europe. signal.org/blog/pdfs/ge...

As someone who kind of wrote a book on it, let me share the number one sign someone is lying to you about politics:

When they claim that, through some unspecified alchemy, paradise and prosperity can be achieved through suffering exclusively by other people.

This is the loveliest comment I've ever received!

(It also hints at the existence of rabbit holes into which I regularly fall because of an astounding lack of discipline...)

Didn't we lead ourselves to believe that Heidegger et al. were some unfortunate exceptions? That generally intellectual work with all the intellectual tools thinkers use in their work would provide some immunity against the worst stupidities? Illusions crumble, that's for sure.

Herta Müller, Elfriede Jelinek's blind spots are of racist nature. Intellectual sophistication and fine writing are no shields to bigotry of a fundamental nature.
