Probably in for rude awakening on how much most authors and other creatives make.

Good. They're part of the problem.

Wha?

Ugh. Why so many newer movies/shows require me to turn my brain off?

I should prob. video myself watching Gods of Egypt or whatever it was called so I can debunk it. But we'd be there for a freaking week. 😂 (It comes to mind bcs people who know me have told me to *never* watch it.)
November 30, 2025 at 8:26 PM
movie (I love Rob Zombie anyway, but even without my enjoyment of his music, it's just a good movie.)

BSG was better IMO than the original. But it's a rare remake that's at least as good, much less better.

Just give me new, please & thanks. Or twist the tropes, genders, *something*.
November 30, 2025 at 8:12 PM
I'm so damned tired of the remakes. Part of why I don't watch much. I want NEW.

Not every mid-life crisis needs to have 'their vision' plastered over a thing they loved 20 years ago FFS.

I'll admit that *some* are better. Zombie's version of Halloween was waaaaaay better and an actually good

And apparently extremely subjective 😅.

Some of my favs people find truly terrifying. (A fact that kinda made me go, huh.)
November 30, 2025 at 8:06 PM
And yes, all that experience shows up in many of my books. If I'm describing something in those realms, it's likely factual.

I subscribe to the notion that fiction is educational.

Revelatory experiences this weekend, I tell ya. 🤣

I've sworn for *decades* that I don't like horror.

Welp.
November 30, 2025 at 7:57 PM
because there's weapons freaking *everywhere* in those movies.

I automatically scan rooms for weapons, it's something my Sensai Xiao taught me to do because absolutely *anything* can be a weapon.

And w/all my forensics and crime scene work? It's safe to say I know what will take down a human fast.

intrinsically.

I gather most people enjoy horror because it's 'safe terror'.

I've already lived through a lot of it.

He also pointed out that I'm a trained (if retired) martial artist with a lot of experience AND a bio-forensic anthropologist, so... the classic Final Girl I shall never be

italicize *and* bold.

Yes. I'm getting old. 😅. But you might still see that in the #WritingCommunity. Some editors still prefer working from paper.

And I spend too much time on Discord.

But my kid is RIGHT.

I really probably won't ever truly understand what other people find scary. Not

I need an italics option. But they make it harder for screen readers to process (as do fancy fonts), so I guess it's old school.

In Markdown and other markup languages, we used to surround a set of characters or words in one asterisk to italicize, two asterisks to bold, and three asterisks to both

truly understand horror, Ma. Your mind is a horror show *as is*."

(Referring to the fact that I just don't find a lot of horror scary because I've *already lived through* events similar to that, survived, and in some cases, healed the damage.)

Oh! And you know what will give you the OMG I've raised them too well feels as a parent?

And make you feel uncomfortably *seen* by your kid?

HOW did I ever find Gremlins scary? I know, I know, New Adult horror, I was in the right age range for it when it came out. Did you know Gremlins is where the PG-13 label comes from?

But wow. Good example of how horror changes. I've almost been alive for two generations (technically, based on 25

only one to exist, some movies are too classic to remake in my opinion. That one was disrespectful, too. Because of what happened, IYKYK.)

We've watched:

Halloween (original 1978)
Halloween (Rob Zombie's 2007 version, sooooo much better, gonna watch the sequel)
Silence of the Lambs
Gremlins

And

The Punisher, Netflix version, to give you an idea of my taste levels for gore.)

Which I still think is odd, with as much physical violence as I've lived through, and yes, I know the psychological reasons behind it.

Oh, I loved The Crow, too. Which is also apparently horror. (The original,

Anything with dolls. I have PTSD surrounding dolls. Long assed story.

I'm good with gore, even extremely gratuitous gore as long as the story supports it. (I loved

Any Child's Play
Leprechaun(s)

So, since my kids are into horror and apparently many of my favourites are horror (Hells, my Ace Assassin Series is billed (by Amazon I assume) as Dark Fantasy Horror soooooo.

It's research and exposure time. Horror movie and book titles welcome. No promises, I haven't a clue what I really like.

not liking horror.

Oops.

But there absolutely IS a kind of horror that has me sleeping with the lights on. I used to think it was psychological horror.

But Silence of the Lambs and Fallen are *absolutely* psychological horror. So IDEK anymore what exact type of horror twigs me like that.
November 30, 2025 at 6:38 PM
The Lost Boys.

Beetlejuice can't *possibly* be horror, Sweeny Todd is a horror?, Brothers Grimm?!

And that's not counting things I definitely knew were horror but love anyway.

Silence of the Lambs, Fallen, Interview, Saw, and I loved the Hellraisers.

So, yeah. Been inadvertently fibbing about

*that*.

But sooooo many of my favourite movies are apparently, legitimately, horror.

Some movies I love that I'd never have considered horror. Constantine. Stigmata. Vampire Hunter D., Blade(all), Hellboy(all, except the reboot because it doesn't exist), Soloman Kane, Nope, I am Legend, Legion,

whenever something large occurs in the world. IE massive Tsunami, War, Pandemics.

Because horror plays on whatever people are afraid of *now*.

Learned a lot about the genre yesterday, and the whys behind it.

Now, SEO & people mislabelling things as horror has had a detrimental effect, no denying
