Thank you @thegameawards.com and @geoffkeighley.bsky.social for another exciting show of releases, announcements, and celebration of video games as an art form. Shout out to all the humans behind the games, including the presenters, voice actors, and developers! You all deserve to be celebrated!

Some (if not, most) AAA game developers are locking themselves into development cycles where they are forced to churn out half baked games to maintain their profit margins for shareholders. Gamers will start to see through that and profits will drop. IE: The latest Call of Duty woes.

Film you’ve seen more than six times. Hard mode: no Stars (Wars nor Trek), LOTR, or Marvel.

Not giving into FOMO (fear of missing out) as much as I possibly can has taught me a few things when it comes to video games. Mainly, waiting for early access games to go “1.0” before buying them is okay. Here are the reasons why:

At least some people in the video game industry are aware of the downfall that over reliance on AI will bring.

Rockstar co-founder and former Grand Theft Auto writer Dan Houser has likened AI to mad cow disease, and claimed that humanity is being pulled in a direction “by a certain group of people who maybe aren't fully rounded humans.” https://bit.ly/4pDEfoN

No, I 100% agree that computer RPGs these days have too much handholding. I, too, yearn for the days of being able to spend hours crafting my perfect build from hundreds of available options, only to discover that it mathematically cannot survive the mandatory rat fight portion of the first dungeon.

People are arguing over the use of AI in video games. We know AI is a cost saving measure at its core when used within video games. Creative human beings being replaced with AI takes away from the artistic harmonics between the story, graphics, and coding. Artistry automated is not artistry at all.

I was mainly a console gamer growing up. I played all the GTAs on launch (midnight release, baby) and I was always super bummed at GTA launch delays. Now I primarily game on PC so I haven’t cared about delays since I couldn’t play them anyway. I recently got a PS5 and now I can be sad, again. ☹️🎉

“A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad.” - Shigeru Miyamoto

This obviously excludes the paid beta testing (aka “pre-release”) that are so popular these days.

Rockstar's beloved series is almost always late, but it's always been worth the wait, too.

A game’s movement style is how the player interacts with the game. It is a significantly different gameplay experience if movement changes dramatically. I don’t play COD because of the “zoomer” style gameplay. I won’t play Battlefield if it molds itself into “COD with vehicles”.
