As I’d done so many times in my life, I levitated just off the carpet as I shortcast the alt form spell so I could have my own appearance. I unlatched the window, climbing onto the roof while closing but not locking the window. Remaining levitated while on the roof to prevent any noise, I jumped onto the nearest tree branch before I released the levitation and then climbed down the tree. For four hours a week, I spoke with someone besides Kylie. I was me instead of Siani and all the obligations and responsibilities that entailed.

But there’s five people within this one body regardless.” Leah wasn’t the only one who played games. “You weren’t here this whole time. Your existence didn’t suddenly populate until her — ” Kisate said. Fine, I would oblige them with actual answers; anything to take satisfaction away from Kisate. “My birth name is Kylie. Rolling the paperclip between my fingers, I took yet another deep breath as I focused onto my mana. What would Mom think if she walked in on me trying to learn how to pick locks on my own bathroom door? What excuse would I give? Did it matter or would she jump to conclusions only partially wrong? I did as Sia had done, sticking the paperclip into the lock. Nothing. I didn’t even feel the tumbler. “Did you break my door?” “Nope. Quit trying to listen. You need to feel for it, control the air around the paperclip instead of the paperclip itself.” I was so not in the mood for whatever game she was playing, but I had little choice: I had to play Sia’s games, or else I truly had no security for the future.

“You know,” Zimihe said, her voice low, danger and joy intertwined. “If you weren’t around, they’d still be here.” Of course I knew that. It was something I lived with daily. I saw her holding Tiffany’s head, severed from the rest of her body. Tiffany’s eyes were on me, scrunched into a glare, as her disconnected body crawled toward me.  Her lips parted, screeching sounds coming from her as she said, “I had a life! Why are you so important that you get to live and I don’t?!”  I wished I could answer her.   I wished I’d died instead.   Shaking my head, I tried to back away, but I tripped over Alex’s fingers, hand dismembered from his arm. His fingers gripped onto my ankle, skin frigid, nails purple with red bloodstains. My eyes watered. There weren’t enough words to apologize. No matter how many times I said I would have taken their place if I could’ve, they didn’t listen because I still lived and they didn’t.

“Kisate, seriously, calm your ass down.” Leah ran over, stepping between me and Kisate. I knew full well the rage in Kisate: the anger, the desire. The hilarious similarities between us, and that those similarities were the origin of our disputes. I knew the ironies and that Kisate wasn’t worth my time. And yet. Yet. I took a deep breath as I stood, meeting Kisate’s eyes once more. At the not-quite reflection. At the fact that Kylie — that I — wasn’t a perfect reflection. “You’re right.” Leah’s head sharply turned at my words; surprise replaced her normally aloof features, ever so slightly widened eyes, lips faintly parted. Kisate took the statement as a victory, huffing as she said, “I’m glad you finally understand your place.” The corners of my lips pulled into a grim smirk, eyes not leaving the woman that had essentially become prey. “I wasn’t finished.” Leah said, “Oh fuck’s sake, why’s it so damn loud tonight?”

“I’m not looking forward to that geometry test next week,” I said. “Dunno how you do that shit to begin with,” Jordan said. “Because Mom said so.” Often, I envied his life, where he didn’t have parents breathing down his neck about every grade. I’d only ever made one D on a quiz, and that was back in middle school. It’d earned me a three-hour lecture, being grounded for a month, and Mom helping me with my homework for weeks afterward. I’d gotten a lecture about how some universities wanted to pull back to middle school grades for admissions. Even now, it felt overboard, but as long as she was happy, she left me alone to actually enjoy life. Also, I hated math, but I hated art class more. Stupid thing never made any sense — I wanted a solution to copy, not pretend I actually cared about the assignment.

“Just be very, very thankful I’m working with the bare minimum.” Sia used her left pointer finger to swipe up on the pole. Blades slid out from both sides. “But we’re done here.” She rushed forward at that same speed I didn’t know my body was even capable of, closing the distance between herself and this strange woman in an almost instant. The blades sliced into the woman like a knife into steak, red dripping down the bladed edge of the pole, onto the woman, into the concrete and carpet. “Oh, you’re actually alive. Yeah, that was really the wrong call on your part.” A twirl of the pole, red coating the other end, like decorations of a dance. Screams of pain, feeling each slice as if it was on my body. The woman fell back, her chest no longer moving, coated in blood. The pole disappeared from Sia’s hands as she bent down to pick up the backpack. No blood was on it. On Dani. On myself, from what I could see. Everything had been calculated, precise. Sia was never out of control.

Moving my thumb away from the light, I extended the same light a third of an inch more. It still was amazing that I had created this ball of light, something about manipulating the air with reflection and something else. I zoned out on the actual logistics because at the end of the day, what I cared about was I made light. Why couldn’t I learn something more like this? Something I could show or do, something that was tangible and real and — “Are you even listening to me?” Kisate asked, and I felt like that kid in class who had a ruler smacked on my hand. The obvious answer was no, not at all; I clocked out at least fifteen minutes prior to generating my magic fidget toy of an illuminated orb. I knew better than to admit that, though. “Yeah, you were talking about um… the Riyati royal line…” Wasn’t my most convincing cover, but I needed a break, and Kisate had already said she didn’t care and was continuing until she decided I deserved a break.

Really wished I knew what the hell I’m even trying to focus on — like an itch I couldn’t reach, a thread unraveling an ocean wave hitting the shore, but I couldn’t explain why it felt like that. That girl that’s similar to Kylie… she looked like the girl I’d seen back at that castle too, actually. He’d said that’d been Chloé, but fuck knew if it’d been a lie or not. Even more so, actually, that girl’s one of the ones I saw whenever Emily touched me, latched onto my arm, or tried other PDA-shit.   Hypermnesia only worked after Act, he’d said, and I actually could confirm that one since I’m barely able to recall even the day b’fore my Act or ‘specially like Kylie’s Act compared to the day my Act’s on, those b’fore Act memories so faint and faded. These memories of the Kylie-lookalikes’re all like that, but I remembered those brief flashes like all my memories after that first time. Like snapshots of memory, a movie with only seconds to it.

This’s where I was born and likely where I’d die too, same as Father and his parents and fuck knew how many generations back. I couldn’t just leave my family, no matter how much they pissed me off.  Her chuckle’s strained, but guess it’d been impressive to get one at all outta her right then. “What would I even major in?”  She’d wanted to be a lawyer at one point. A doctor another. A pet walker for like two weeks, but pretty sure Ms. Rae shot that one down. “Don’t have to decide day one, d’you?”  “I’ve been putting down psychology because I guess it’d help with my empathy, but the idea of being stuck with tons of people and their emotions all day doesn’t really sound… thrilling either.”   I rubbed my neck. “Ah, yeah.” Was all made worse by my emotions being damn sirens to her, and every time she brought it up, I felt embarrassed as fuck all over again. “Opposite’d be like… the computer class you’re in?”

I brought my arms around her left arm. “You’re mine. No one’s taking you away, sorry.”  “Yours?” She snorted. “Not my type, sorry.”  What was that supposed to mean? “Um. What is then?”  That earned me yet another snicker. On one hand, my response had distracted her from her anxiety; on the other, I was pretty sure said entertainment came at my expense. “Not women.”  Oh, that kind of type. “Um, oh, that’s not what I meant. I don’t like anyone like that. I just meant—”  A slight smirk. “No one, huh?” I didn’t care for that coy tint in her tone, and I had no intent on giving her further free ammo.
