New book klaxon: I finally piss EVERYONE off!

What happens when you put health on platforms geared for shopping, PR & entertainment?

What's medicine and what's marketing? And what impact is it having on health?

(In public health lingo -it's commercial meets digital determinants of health)

Can anyone explain why the Government is still doing most of its communications through a website whose owner is now openly rallying the far right to trigger a violent insurrection on our streets?

Our democracy is too precious to be a plaything for foreign tech barons.

Elon Musk doesn’t care about the British people or our rights. He only cares about himself and his ego.

The @nytimes.com has rarely felt as hopelessly out of its depth as in the past two days or so. There is still much I admire, many journalists I respect and trust, but on the Charlie Kirk assassination it simply hasn’t been very informative - not to mention some atrocious opinion “journalism”.

I can recall when you used to get tickets for concerts at record shops or venues. You'd maybe have to travel to get them. Now the "convenience" of the internet means you'll probably flub off a full day of work in a frantic lottery that if you win, costs you a mortgage payment. Progress, by Jaysus.

A colleague at my placement today suggested she might break both my ankles to stop me leaving in January. I normally accept all forms of flattery, but... 🤔

That’s a joke. I’ve given up now as I’m certain that’s all that’s left and I can’t get the message to go away now 😢 @radiohead.wastehq.social

🚨 The CDC as we know it is being severely altered tonight.

In addition to the CDC director being ousted, the Post is reporting that several senior leaders are leaving as well.

Here are from two of the resignations:

"I am not able to serve in this role any longer because of the ongoing weaponizing of public health," Demetre Daskalakis, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, wrote, adding that CDC staff "continue to shine despite this dark cloud over the agency and our profession."
CDC's chief medical officer Debra Houry told staff "ongoing changes" prevent her from continuing in her job.
"Vaccines save lives - this is an indisputable, well-established, scientific fact," Houry wrote.
"Recently, the overstating of risks and the rise of misinformation have cost lives, as demonstrated by the highest number of U.S. measles cases in 30 years and the violent attack on our agency."

Support services always seem to become an afterthought when medicine 💊 is available.

But these services save lives, create friendships, educate, build self-love. Something a pill could never do.

We must save them.

We analysed 576 persistent infections and found:
– More common in men & those >60yrs
– Most variation driven by nonsynonymous mutations, esp. in spike NTD & RBD
– Longer infection → higher viral clock rates
– Onward transmission is rare
– Only ~2% showed viral rates on par with highly divergent VOCs
