For anyone having a bad night tonight, or feeling like they don’t “deserve” an accommodation they need…. You do deserve it.

Don’t feel guilty.

Living with chronic illness is hard and we should feel empowered to do whatever we need to in order to make life a bit easier.

Since many of you are distracted by other things or not following any Jewish media, you should know that today, on one of the holiest days of the year, a man drove his car into a crowd gathering to go into a Synagogue in Manchester then got out and started stabbing people. Two people are dead.

It is communal, it is reflective, it is purifying.

It goes along with the theme of resistance that my shul has this High Holidays. I’ll talk more about that part later.

But to all who keep Yom Kippur, knock on the door of your heart.

But my Rabbi at that time said that we are not punishing ourselves, we are knocking on our hearts. So now, rather than a punishing hit, I am knocking on the door of my heart. Opening it to myself, to my community, to the plight of all those in distress.

We knock on our hearts to open them, a Yom Kippur reflection:

Years ago, a Rabbi changed Yom Kippur for me forever. See, multiple times we recount our sins/the sins of our community, and as we do we beat our chest. I used to think of it as a punishing hit.

G’mar chatima tova!
To those of you who fast, may it be a meaningful fast.
To those of you who cannot fast safely, remember it is a mitzvah to take care of your body.

To those of you who aren’t Jewish, reminder that this evening (20 min away for me) starts Yom Kippur, pretty much our holiest day.

Happy 1st of Halloween! 🎃👻

Heres ya reminder to not use the term "Sp***y" if youre not Black! 🐻🔪

It has a Racist History & there's lots of good replacements {my fave is Cweepy 🤭} so expand ya lexicon! 🥰

Info: www.npr.org/sections/cod...

Shit's also not allowed in my spaces if you're Non-Black. 💖
In most horror spaces online the word “Sp**ky” is frequently used HOWEVER, NON-BLACK folk are prohibited from using it in this community!

Although it is commonly used as a silly way to describe horror / creepy content - the word “Sp**ky” has racist history in Northern America.

For more info on the racist history click this graphic!

As a half cutesy & half horror channel - we push back on this & ask you to expand your literary horizons! = !cweepy”

This panel links to an article from NPR code switch about the racist history of the word “Sp**ky” in Northern America!

Again, many Jews will not be online for over 25 hours.

As a side note, personally I highly prefer “have a meaningful fast” over “have an easy fast,” as we are fasting for a reason and if it’s too easy I actually feel like I’m cheating, in a way. But that’s a personal preference.

Sleep deprivation really does make everything else worse, and worsened chronic pain absolutely makes sleep harder. Working to get back out of this vicious cycle.

At least I’m back in PT to work on the parts I reinjured/exacerbated during the move…

“We rise, in body or in spirit”
The Torah stands, the congregation stands.
Your body sits, but we feel you standing with us.

(I want to rework that last line to end with a word that rhymes with “you,” and am trying to decide if I want another set of lines or if that’s the end. Thoughts?)
kamianya.bsky.social
A work in progress:

“We rise, in body or in spirit”
Seven little words that say so much.
We see you, we know you, we welcome you.

“We rise, in body or in spirit”
You are part of this community.
Do not feel guilt for what your body cannot do.

Thanks for resharing, you definitely brought more eyes to this 💜

I really wish more accessibility things defaulted to on, rather than off.
kamianya.bsky.social
I primarily use the bsky app on my iPad, but it sounds like based on what others said an update likely was the culprit.
It kinda sucks that accessibility settings automatically turn off rather than the default being on (or just…not resetting).
kamianya.bsky.social
Hey y’all, if you are using the setting to remind you to use alt text, you might want to check and make sure it’s still on. I know for a fact that it I had it on for me, but it seems to have turned itself off at some point.
kamianya.bsky.social
(I have a post I want to make later, but I don’t have the energy to do alt text for this much text. So please ignore this for now, unless you are up for helping. I’m really just sharing for #Alt4Me )
kamianya.bsky.social
I don’t know what it means or how to take it, though, realizing my shul community masks better than the doctor offices and hospitals I’m at frequently…
But it also fits, considering it’s a congregation heavily involved with social action and tikkun olam.
kamianya.bsky.social
Masks weren’t required at services today, yet I believe there was the highest percentage of masks worn that I have ever seen without the requirement. It was still probably only about a third of us, but with the way everything was laid out I still felt comfortable staying.
kamianya.bsky.social
Here’s hoping enough people are wearing masks I’ll feel comfortable first day and Yom Kippur Kol Nidre and Neilah…
I’ll live-stream if needed, but it’s just not the same.
kamianya.bsky.social
I have been so thrilled that my synagogue still requires masks…
Except now “Services on the second day of Rosh Hashanah and the morning of Yom Kippur will be mask-required. All other services will be mask-optional.”

Not sure if that changed or if I just misread before.
kamianya.bsky.social
I repost this prayer every so often, as it has basically become my own mantra. Heading into Rosh Hashana, it feels very appropriate right now:
kamianya.bsky.social
God,
Keep my anger from becoming meanness.
Keep my sorrow from collapsing into self-pity.
Keep my heart soft enough to keep breaking. Keep my anger turned towards justice, not cruelty.
Remind me that all of this, every bit of it, is for love.
Keep me fiercely kind.
Amen.

During times like these, it’s very easy to feel guilt about having joy, posting about light things, etc.

Please remember, marginalized joy is transformative, it is resistance, it is important.
