Are you getting tired of elliptical shell galaxies yet? The shells NGC 3923 are more difficult to distinguish. They are also interestingly symmetrical while other shell galaxies are seemingly much more random. It is possible to process them more aggressively to make them more apparent but I think that would do a disservice to just how tenuously demarcated they are. A curious knot of dust is present in the foreground. I'm unsure if it is associated with the distant galaxy or if it is a local feature. Full disclosure: Data was once again cloned to cover the distracting chip gap. I will happily supply a version without cloned data if anyone asks. In my Tic Tac Toe app, I used NativeScript’s animate() API for all animations - it gives smooth, logic-tied transitions as it runs JS thread. Many animations can cause frame drops or memory buildup, and need manual cleanup to avoid leaks or OOM errors.

The Calabash Nebula, pictured here — which has the technical name OH 231.8+04.2 — is a spectacular example of the death of a low-mass star like the sun. This image taken by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope shows the star going through a rapid transformation from a red giant to a planetary nebula, during which it blows its outer layers of gas and dust out into the surrounding space. The recently ejected material is spat out in opposite directions with immense speed — the gas shown in yellow is moving close to one million kilometers per hour (621,371 miles per hour). Astronomers rarely capture a star in this phase of its evolution because it occurs within the blink of an eye — in astronomical terms. Over the next thousand years the nebula is expected to evolve into a fully-fledged planetary nebula. The nebula is also known as the Rotten Egg Nebula because it contains a lot of sulphur, an element that, when combined with other elements, smells like a rotten egg — but luckily, it resides over 5,000 light-years away in the constellation of Puppis. It really pains me to spot a galaxy like this in the archive. This is just how the old WFPC2 did things. You need at least two different frames to complete a larger object but there's a whole bunch of them that only got one so they all look just like this. NGC 3433 is almost perfectly symmetrical. It's so symmetrical you could clone the data, rotate it 180 degrees to cover just the black L and it would look like a complete galaxy with minimal touch-up to make brightness match. It was tempting to upload a version like that but it would be way too easy for the image to be taken out of context and for people to think that the data was actually there when it's really just cloned. I increased the saturation to create a greater range of color. I also increased the sharpness of the dust so you can see more details. Red: hst_08213_03_wfpc2_f814w_wf_sci Green: Pseudo Blue: hst_08213_03_wfpc2_f555w_wf_sci North is NOT up, it's 37.7° counter-clockwise from up.

Spiral galaxy NGC 613 and the search for the progenitor of SN 2016gkg. Pockets of star formation are visible as green nebulas of gas in this near-infrared and visible image. The galaxy's bar is quite distinct and completely within the bounds of the image, but much of the outer arms are not included. I will mark the approximate position of the supernova with a Flickr annotation. I find the circumnuclear ring of star formation to be especially beautiful in this image, though you'll have to zoom in to see it clearly. I spent a good number of days working on this, which feels incredibly slow compared to the pace I've been keeping with the single filter (grayscale) images of galaxies from the past couple of months. There were a whole lot of cosmic rays to deal with, and I did my best, though there are still a few hiding here and there. I bumped up the saturation a good bit along with the clarity and dust texture of the nucleus. Data from the following proposal were used to create this image: The Progenitor of Supernova 2016gkg Red: ACS/WFC F814W Green: ACS/WFC F606W Blue: ACS/WFC F435W North is 25.19° counter-clockwise from up.

A quick view of the Rosetta nebula - From Ángel López-Sánchez - https://flic.kr/p/2kLxJKy
I didn't want to miss getting a nice image of one of my all-time favourite nebulae, the Rosetta nebula, before it was too late in the season and moved into the west. This image combines 15 x 60s exposures in each color channel, using broad-band filters B (blue), G (green) and R (red). I also tried to achieve natural colours (i.e. the colours we would see with our eyes). The data were taken at 10:30pm, Sunday 15 March 2021, from Siding Spring Observatory (near Coonabarabran, NSW, Australia). I used a ZWO ASI1600MM-Pro at -20C with the ZWO 2" BGR filters, my new 7x2" ZWO filter wheel, a Skywatcher Black Diamond 80mm with an Orion x0.8 focal reducer (effective focal length 480 mm, f/6). I used the ZWO ASIAir to control the camera, filter wheel, the mount (Skywatcher AZ-EQ6) and the guiding system (ASI120MM + Orion 50mm finderscope). The data have been processed with SIRIL, then converted into TIF using Fits Liberator using a logarithmic stretch, and finally combined in Photoshop to get the colours and the final details. Darks, flats and biases were used. I usually try to get at least 30-40 frames per filter, but as I said this was a compromise to get a nice colour shot of this nebula before it set, and hence I took 15 exposures per filter, and only 60 seconds each (and the highest gain in the camera, hence the noise that can be seen when zooming in). NGC 5308 is a smooth, lenticular galaxy with some subtle structural details and a good smattering of globular clusters surrounding it in a halo. You can see them swarming around its periphery like a bunch of bees at a hive. On the right is a very irregular-looking, dim galaxy and a handful of other background galaxies and spiky foreground stars can also be seen. Deep View of Peculiar Galaxy Pair Arp 171 - From Rolf Wahl Olsen - https://flic.kr/p/2o5JC4q
This very deep exposure shows the rarely imaged interacting galaxy pair Arp 171. The pair consists of the lenticular (S0) galaxies NGC5718 and IC1042, and lie at the heart of a galaxy cluster 400 million light years away towards the constellation Virgo. The galaxies were discovered by William Herschel in 1786 and later classified in Halton Arp's Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies under the category 'galaxies with diffuse counter-tails'. While Arp only saw the bright central core regions, this long exposure reveals the full extent of the tidal streams and shells of stars that have been flung far outwards from the merging cores. These extended structures form when the cores of merging galaxies orbit around their common centre of mass in an ever tighter orbit while disrupting the halos of both galaxies and sending billions of stars into eccentric orbits. The halos of this pair of merging galaxies appear somewhat diffuse but the process can give rise to outward traveling density waves in the form of very distinct shells, such as those in NGC3923, until the collision eventually settles as one single large galaxy. Several smaller members of the cluster can be seen around the merging galaxy pair, and in the background numerous other more distant galaxies can be seen. Near the top edge of the image lies a very distant galaxy cluster, visibly reddened by the cosmological redshift at very large distances.
