I joined Mastodon right before joining here (@[email protected]). I found out about it a long time ago, but I must admit that I also found it quite a bit daunting. These days, though, it looks so friendly! If you go to joinmastodon.org you will see two buttons

in my opinion this ended up being a great thing for react. if you chase “adoption” as a primary metric in your open source project, you’ll make different choices than if you just want the project to meet its use cases and be useful to other people

i worked on react at meta for eight years, and there was literally never a moment when the management would ask what we’re doing to increase “dominance” or “market share”.

if anything, the pressure was always slightly nudged towards internal use cases, and the team successfully pushed back on that

When @aceottorney.bsky.social first told me about this I said "this could change people's lives and stop developers from getting exploited" and having seen the final resource, I think I was not wrong. I'd call it a must-bookmark for indie devs.

Retheming my #Emacs. A bit tired of gruvbox after quite a few years and feeling the nord vibes lately

The aurora variation from doom-themes looks just right for me, with an extra splash of color here and there

I stole this link 👀

Also, we can all meet on Fedi too, endless possibilities!

I never played it, enjoy! What is your portable thingy?

Again, really loving the illustrations in the book!

There’s so much nuance I miss with my level of Japanese, but it looks like her mom is lot more stern in the book and there’s a conflict between her wanting Kiki to follow witch traditions, while Kiki wants to learn to be her own person
An illustration from the first Kiki’s Delivery Service book in Japanese showing a scene on the family living room where Okino, Kiki’s father is sitting by the table with his elbows resting on it while he holds his chin. Kiki’s mom Cokiri is standing up, she’s wearing a black bandanna on her head and all black dress. She’s looking at Kiki with a serious expression while Kiki stands kind of timidly, dressed in a polka dot dress and with a lace on her head, holding a broom with the brush side up. Jiji, Kiki’s black cat, is standing close to her legs. There’s a calendar hanging on the wall, since the three of them are debating Kiki’s departure date

Finally, I will just add that I the lingo a lot better: toots! Like an elephant, but also you can toot your own horn, I guess?
Boosts also sound cool and there's a culture of using them first as a sign of appreciation, instead of the more timid like

It has an official client which is good enough, tbh, but also it has a Tapbots macOS/iOS client which I find delightful. It also saves my place on my timeline, even when I'm thousands of messages behind (the official might do that as well, though)

I got more engagement from random people there that I get here sometimes, even though I have virtually no followers there. Also, the character limit in my instance is 500, some servers have it even higher. There's also pixelfed.social which feels like when Instagram was a photo sharing community

Fedi has some cool stuff too! If you're interested in #blender3d or #opensource you can follow hashtags and see posts in your timeline even from people who you don't follow. That also means it's easier to reach people that are interested in this stuff by using them
kaofelix.dev
I still post here a lot more, mainly because of the momentum of when I joined meant that it was easy and quick to find a little community that I grew attached to. I didn't have to put in much work, it happened organically and quick, but I think the same can happen over time in Fedi too

I'm not a protocol nerd. I see people here dissing ActivityPub for being flawed and people involved with it as being unreasonable and defensive. I can't judge this, but from the outside it looks like AP started decentralised first, while AT is a company first where decentralisation is a "vision"
kaofelix.dev
2. The one in the right is as if we lived in the promised future of decentralisation. Imagine hundreds of servers to choose from, ran by different people. There are servers for specific interests, there are people that run their own servers for their own account and no one else, servers of all types
kaofelix.dev
(oops, I hit the much lower character limit per post here!)

1. The left one is as if you were joining bsky.app. Pretend it's the "main central server" (it's really not, but as a user it might as well be. I went for mastodon.online because it also looked sort of official, but different *shrug*)

In the visual side, it’s like when Understanding Comics talks about the universality of cartoon faces. But I wonder if there’s something similar in the mechanics side too, where simple mini games can fit a certain kind of activity and represent it in a way that you feel certain aspects of it more
Cartoon Scott McCloud explaining through a speech balloon:

“Another is the universality of cartoon imagery. The more cartoony a face is for instance, the more people it could be said to describe.”

under a row showing faces, from a black and white photo of a man pointing it represents a single person, and going down on abstraction level until being the basic cartoon face composed of a circle with two dots for eyes and a line for a mouth, said to represent (nearly) all people
kaofelix.dev
Consume Me makes me think how graphical realism + video gamey stuff creates an uncanny valley that reduces realism, while cartoonish styles connected with simple representative mechanics makes it feel real and lived for me

I used to play the sequel on my stepmother’s family’s house. Her brother had a PC and would let me play games there. It blew my mind with the characters, town and voice acting
