Finally rejoined social media - for science and connection! My undergrad powered lab investigates how cells in the developing visual system transition from proliferation to differentiation using lots of microscopy. Equal parts teaching, research, and mentoring the next generation.

And note scientists may go YEARS using jargon words that they didn’t realize were jargon (I learned this the hard way when my #SciComm grad student class last spring asked me what “benthic” means - now I always use “seafloor” instead!)

Want to make sure kids today have a better grasp of science than the generation currently running our country? (Yes. You do. You've heard RFK, Jr. talk, right?!)

A donation to Skype a Scientist will help! Look at all these bubbles! Won't it be satisfying to see them all filled?

Whew, ok, with a few hours to spare, the 2025 classroom map is ready! The 7th annual United States of Science competition starts tomorrow.

If you wanna get your region off to a head start, just between us night owls, here's that link 😘

Researchers from @cincychildrens.bsky.social, among others, used DSHB's anti-Cdh1 [5D3] mAb in a study on the mutation of orthologous genes and how it affects trachea-esophageal morphogenesis in Xenopus.

SAVE COSMIC SCIENCE FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS!

I wrote about the current astronomy/particle physics/cosmology 🔭 ⚛️🧪 funding catastrophe in context of all of the other ongoing catastrophes, including what we can do to save our science.

h/t to @skylargrayson.bsky.social for posting the image.
Fund astronomy, not genocide.
You can help save cosmic science for future generations. This figure by Skylar Grayson shows how much the univese we will be cut off from studying using...

Most of us in higher ed in the US are going to lose something over the next four years (opportunities, or funding, or time). But if we believe universities exist, in part, to preserve historical memory and create a space for dissent, our primary job right now is to fight and take the hit.

America’s long-term growth is at stake. Congress is weighing sweeping FY2026 cuts to fundamental science, including $18 billion from the NIH and $5 billion from the NSF.

In the long run, these cuts will cost the economy billions.
