There’s a huge opportunity here for green social housing. Even with these zoning changes, new construction faces headwinds, especially for lower-income residents. But the state is now opening space—literally—for the subsidized construction of beautiful, climate-friendly, mixed-income homes.

California's SB 79 has now passed the State Senate, after passing the State Assembly yesterday. It's now on to the governor's desk.

It's a big change in zoning policy for California's cities that will encourage substantial additional housing in neighborhoods around the state's transit stations.

Early research in Illinois shows eliminating cash bail didn't increase crime. In fact, Chicago is having a big crime drop.

It's difficult to attribute that drop to a single cause (crime data is messy!) But it is safe to say ending cash bail didn't lead to a spike.

IT’S NOT RENT CONTROL

a tiny, tiny sliver of NYC’s housing stock is rent controlled, an old an nearly obsolete policy. Mamdani has said many times it’s rent stabilization, which is quite common (1M apts) and different.

Cuomo should know this imho!
a chart from the 2023 census/HPD housing and vacancy survey showing only 24K apartments in NYC are rent controlled while 996K apartments are rent stabilized

The attack on bike lanes in #Toronto is getting the @nytimes.com treatment today.

They're framing it as "drivers vs. cyclists."

It's really Premier Doug Ford and his Conservatives vs. the cities of #Ontario.
