Sun Times: Prosecutors "said Martinez had a loaded firearm on the passenger side of her car but never brandished it. Martinez’s attorney, Parente, said she has a valid firearm and concealed-carry license."

Via the Sun Times:

Martinez's lawyer said "she has “seven holes” in her from the shooting and that agents were in such a hurry to take her into custody at the hospital that they had to return later when Martinez began bleeding from her wounds."

The Sun Times reports: Martinez is charged w/ felony assault of a federal officer. Prosecutors say Martinez was following agents, disobeying traffic signals and driving “aggressively” to chase the federal vehicles.

Not a perfect comparison... but I cover prisons and jails-- so this is something I've felt acutely over the years. How to make problems that are more ongoing/systemic resonate as much as things that feel newer.
shannonheffernan.bsky.social
I'm not saying (to be fair!) that the actions of other federal officers in recent weeks aren't unique or new. Only that ICE/CBP/etc. operating in a city feels more normal compared to national guard.

And maybe we (including me!) need to be careful about our criteria when choosing stories.
shannonheffernan.bsky.social
It's striking to me how much more national attention the deployment of National Guard in Chicago is getting over actions of other fed. officers in recent weeks (2 shootings, tear gas, arrests)

I think it points to a weakness of journalism: prioritizing what feels novel over impactful

New: a federal judge in Chicago has set a 2 pm detention hearing today for Marimar Martinez, the woman border patrol shot on Saturday, along with her co-defendant Anthony Ian Santos Ruiz.

Both now face charges for allegedly assaulting federal agents.

It’s not even 10 a.m., and so much has unfolded in Chicago:

– Illinois sues Trump over the National Guard deployment

– Mayor Brandon Johnson bans city property use for immigration enforcement

– Journalists and protesters sue the feds over Broadview violence

HAPPENING NOW — This morning, Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order establishing “ICE-free zones.”

“That means that city property and unwilling private businesses will no longer serve as grounds for these raids,” Johnson said to applause.

TONIGHT — Just after 8:30pm tonight, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker shared that the Texas National Guard is being deployed to Chicago.

“This evening, President Trump is ordering 400 members of the Texas National Guard for deployments to Illinois, Oregon, and other locations within the United States.”
CHICAGO – Today, Governor JB Pritzker released the following statement after the Illinois National Guard was informed that the Texas National Guard is preparing deployments to Illinois:

“This evening, President Trump is ordering 400 members of the Texas National Guard for deployments to Illinois, Oregon, and other locations within the United States. No officials from the federal government called me directly to discuss or coordinate.

“We must now start calling this what it is: Trump’s Invasion. It started with federal agents, it will soon include deploying federalized members of the Illinois National Guard against our wishes, and it will now involve sending in another state’s military troops.

“I call on Governor Abbott to immediately withdraw any support for this decision and refuse to coordinate. There is no reason a President should send military troops into a sovereign state without their knowledge, consent, or cooperation.

“The brave men and women who serve in our national guards must not be used as political props. This is a moment where every American must speak up and help stop this madness."

New statement from National Lawyers Guild of Chicago: 18 total arrests at the protest yesterday at the Broadview, IL ICE facility; 13 by feds and 5 by state or local police.

Four more arrests observed today in Chicago's Brighton Park neighborhood. Likely being brought to Broadview, per statement.

"NLG Chicago condemns arrests by state and federal authorities at demonstrations outside Broadview ICE detention facility and in Chicago

On Friday, Oct. 3, the National Lawyers Guild of Chicago (NLG Chicago) documented multiple arrests by federal and state authorities at a constitutionally protected demonstration outside the notorious ICE detention facility in suburban Broadview, IL.

CHICAGO - On Friday, Oct. 3, the National Lawyers Guild of Chicago (NLG Chicago) documented multiple arrests by federal and state authorities at a constitutionally protected demonstration outside the notorious ICE detention facility in suburban Broadview, IL.

NLG Chicago confirmed there were 18 arrests in total: 13 by federal law enforcement, and 5 by state or local police. Of the 13 federal arrests, 11 individuals were released without charges after being held for 12 hours. They were driven off-site and released at a gas station, a concerning pattern that NLG Chicago has witnessed with other recent arrests. The remaining two people in federal custody will be held until their appearances in federal court in Chicago on Monday." Image text:

"Of the 5 state or local arrests, 4 were released from police custody with misdemeanor charges or citations. The remaining person was held in custody overnight for a hearing today in Cook County criminal court, and was ordered released today. We expect this person to be released tonight.
Today, October 4, our legal observers on the ground in the Brighton Park neighborhood of Chicago documented four arrests. We expect that those arrested will be taken to the Broadview ICE detention center, where our volunteer attorneys will attempt to visit them in custody.

Our legal observers also witnessed many violent attacks by federal law enforcement on the community, while the Chicago Police Department stood by watching federal agents’ violence. At one point, a lone federal agent stood in front of a line of Chicago Police officers, and deliberately tossed a can of tear gas into a small crowd of community members who were standing nearby.

NLG Chicago condemns the use of police violence and criminal charges, whether federal, state or local, to suppress the righteous dissent of the people.

We will continue to defend the Constitutional rights of those standing up and speaking out."

I've never seen such escalation and use of force toward ends I just could not see. There was no real property destruction, no pushing into the neighborhoods to make arrests, very little obstructing of traffic. Saw chemicals and bangs deployed down streets the feds were not facing and did not travel.

I keep thinking about this. There are excellent journalist on the ground doing great work. But the level of coverage does not seem to match the level of what is happening here.

If what was happening in Chicago was happening in NYC, there would be wall-to-wall cable news coverage

Heard an officer say "let's do it" and then, in the dark, they tackle Rabbi Ben to the ground. He's being loaded into a CCSO wagon now. Broadview police also here screaming at people.

Happening now: at Kedzie and 40th, where Border Patrol agents just opened fire on rapid response this afternoon. A woman CFD says they found after the incident is reported in fair condition.

A growing number of outraged neighbors have gathered across from ICE/CBP agents who have closed Kedzie.
