One of the most important things you can do right now is to support pro-public education candidates for school board. Look and see if your district is holding an election and if there's a good candidate, put up a sign, hold a meet-and-greet, or throw a few bucks their way. democracy-education.org

The MSNBC commentator saying that most political violence has historically come from the left just once again showed how we suffer from failing to learn history. Lynching, pogroms, race riots, the political violence that ended Reconstruction, and against the Civil Rights Movement. Come on.

I think we can look to the "orange revolution" and some of the other movements in Eastern Europe.

Right now school board candidates around the country are gearing up for a November election. Look around. If you are in a school district with a pro-public education candidate, sign up to help--make some phone calls, hold a meet-and-greet in your driveway, put a sign in your yard, give a few bucks.

Part of the job of the Congress is to know what government agencies are doing. This is an outrageous usurpation of power by the executive.

Sen. Mark Warner, a top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, arranged a routine visit to the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency, but Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s office canceled it after posts by far-right activist Laura Loomer.

We need to restore it at every level. But one place to start is locally and local school boards are the most accountable and see-able representatives of democracy. We all need to support school board candidates and members who support public education and democracy.

They maybe didn't imagine modern communications or transportation. But they did imagine Trump. They knew that throughout history humans have had feckless, cruel kings and dictators.

For him it will always be 1970s New York City.

Wow. I've been doing all that stuff for years. Didn't know I was taking my life in my hands. But do I have to wear a watch now?

Police quote: "Real officers do not wear ski masks."

Only surprise here is that it took this long.

HOUSTON: “An investigation is underway after two men wearing ski masks and claiming to be police were shot and killed at a home in southeast Houston Friday night…”

It was only a matter of time. Trump’s masked Gestapo makes everyone unsafe.

The people who signed up to help in exactly this situation--the flooding of Charleston--are instead being used as pawns by their governor currying favor with a wanna-be king.

Call in the National Guard to help the residents of Charleston.

Oh, wait.

South Carolina’s governor sent them to DC for Trump’s occupation.

Fast-moving water was seen rushing down the streets of Charleston, South Carolina, on Friday as the National Weather Service warned of “dangerous flash flooding.” The service said that by 4:20 p.m. local time on Friday, as much as 6 inches of rain had fallen.

Thread--and those three backlashes are only some of them. Another example is the Red Summer of 1919, when white mobs attacked African Americans in Elaine Arkansas, Chicago, and Washington DC, followed by Tulsa in 1921. Backlashes have often led to American pogroms.

Excellent thread. I'll just add that there's a long history of blaming liberals for reactionary political dynamics that were cultivated by coordinated political campaigns by the far right. There is no law of nature that produces "backlash politics." It's politics (and propaganda) that produces it.
volts.wtf
To put all this much shorter: the right's vaccine denialism is not the left's fault. They didn't arrive at that skepticism because of something the left did. They SAY that, of course, because they blame the left for everything, but liberals don't have to take them at their word! They lie a lot!
karinchenoweth.bsky.social
You're absolutely right. So if you know of folks who are running for school board who support public education and democracy, let them know about us. www.democracy-education.org

Why would they even use a public printer--much less leave papers in it. Geez. We're being represented by complete incompetence.

The term "Americanism" was then embraced by the KKK that was resurgent in the 1920s. A group called the "Americanist Educational League" was founded in 1927 (it still exists, btw) by a guy who would go on to be the leading voice for Japanese internment in WWII

We're starting to see who will be running for school board this November. If you live in a district where there is a pro-public education candidate, support them! Put a sign in your window or yard; give them a little money; invite them to coffee with friends. www.democracy-education.org

You can't teach U.S. history without "divisive" narratives. Slavery wasn't "unifying." The Japanese incarceration wasn't "unifying." The anti-immigrant Operation Wetback (real name) wasn't "unifying."
It's history's job to tell the truth, not cover up past racism to pave the way for future racism.
