It’s only when the order is clearly illegal based on information you possess that you are obliged to disobey. “Bomb that boat” is not clearly illegal. “Kill the survivors clinging to the wreckage” is because you can see that they are not a legitimate target.

You don’t get the full intel when you are given an order. The briefing tells the pilot what they need to know to carry out a strike, but not the reason why their superiors believe the strike is necessary. You assume they have valid reasons for the order and you are obliged to obey.

My favorite bit of trivia is that going in, the audience was disappointed that instead of seeing an established hit show, they had to see an unknown (WKRP hadn’t aired when the episode was shot). Then they saw one of the best episodes ever filmed.
