I started Itihasa and I'm liking the plot (the plot in question, pictured)

A bit too many slots left considering the year ends in 3 weeks, but we'll see how far I get!! Almost there!

Seriously very well crafted thriller, I get why people like it! I did too! I confess the closer we got to the end the more I was interested in the themes surrounding names, identity & sense of self rather than the mystery, but I guess that's not a bad thing. The Prague centric arc was my fave!

Riddhe's character was also incredible! I loved his character arc the most, it was clearly written and made sense. Idk man, I love when characters feel Big Feelings and it's difficult for them.

This has some of my favorite characters ever. Banagher is a really good protagonist, I love his trust and hope in humanity as I do in every Gundam protag. His sensitivity is something I found interesting: one of the best scenes in Gundam ever is when he is forced to act, then saying he cannot shoot.

Gundam: Unicorn (7 OVA episodes, 50-90mins)

One of the best Gundam series there is. Clear character arcs, incredible cinematography. I liked the character designs and how the characters moved, very good character acting! The way this was directed truly stood out to me the most. Great job!

And then this continuation (MEGA SPOILERS)

This is the most romantic thing ever to happen in Gundam (MEGA SPOILERS for Unicorn)

INCREDIBLE WORK! A bit outdated in its melodrama (which still works for me, I love that stuff), but man did this deliver. Werther is a perfect protag: it's easy to empathize with his grief but also see that he's selfish and hurts others while hurting himself.

While I liked this more, this wasn't really much better than part 1. Incredibly rushed & the actually interesting political stuff is only as background. I'll give book 3 a go and see what I'll do. I did like Rakushun tho. Would have really liked this series at 14, wish I had had these back then.

THIS WAS SO GOOD!! The prose is remarkable and truly what stands out the most. While "human vs beast" and "who were the real monsters" are common concepts and have been done before, Kallas gives it her own twist which I really enjoyed.

The things that friends make you read (ignore the typos I'm not typing all that again)

Everyone was calling this good when the omnibus was announced. I disagree. The author did have a cool sounding plot to go for, they just didn't get there. But even if this hadn't been axed I still wouldn't have much to say, as there were many things I didn't like. This just wasn't for me at all.

My view of fantasy has been that it's a bit cliché, but I've been trying to change that image & find something for me. Sadly this wasn't it. I'll check book 2 to finish this story arc & maybe book 3, but if it doesn't improve that's where I'll stop. Sad, I was super excited for this release :(

The overall idea was cute, but the storytelling style lost me very early on. I don't remember why I read this, I don't know why I finished this and I probably won't even remember reading this a year from now.

Yeah, this is a Junji Ito work. As always, quality varies, but there were some interesting ideas (the story about cycle of familial abuse & obsession with beauty was interesting). Much better than The Liminal Zone sequel, but nothing new really. Yet I grab a new release from the library every time.

This series go to the category of "clearly YA" but it's fine, had fun. Some of the character writing was good (I liked the last chapters a lot, everyone was having a bad time) and some bad. But it's fine. I've been eyeing the author's other series without knowing it's hers, will read that too!

This has its highs & lows, but I'd say my overall experience was positive! Scifi is a niche in shoujo so it's always nice to read. The author clearly put a lot of effort into the world building, I wish we could have gone even deeper. Liked the message of humanity always having hope for the future.

While I think the overall to do list/red flags to look out for isn't bad, the construction of this work isn't very good. Not a single source sited, no bibliography. This was very USA centric, but this was written for the post 2016 elections America, so I guess it's meant to be so.

Fantastic analysis, especially for something this short (and what is originally a lecture). This isn't the most beginner friendly introduction to the subject, but a good read nonetheless. Infuriating how this is still relevant today.

Finally got my copy of shoujo manga magazine Betsucomi's 55th anniversary artbook! It features art from several series in the magazine, like Moto Hagio's The Poe Clan, Akimi Yoshida's Banana Fish, Yumi Tamura's Basara, Taeko Watanabe's Kaze Hikaru & Hinako Ashihara's Sand Chronicles

I adored this series. The way it talks about understanding, love, freedom and family is really heartwarming. To record someone's story is to listen, to listen is to understand & to understand is to love. Meeting your fellow human and remembering the good & the bad is what it means to live.

This is one of the best manga I've ever read. The worldbuilding is immersive & the character writing is excellent. My only complaint is about the occasional nods to otaku culture (jokes about sister complex etc.) as they really take the reader out of the story. But otherwise perfect, 5 stars!!

I need to get my thoughts in order to write a longer Children of the Whales review but what I will say of the ending is that I almost dropped my book when reading this (HEAVY Children of the Whales spoilers) ("strong friendship for the rest of their lives" I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE)

Wasted potential. The afterword was actually good at leaving an uneasy atmosphere, but everything else fell flat. The story was bad & there wasn't really any payoff, all was just explained immediately. I applaud the author for challenging the form of a novel but they failed, this just doesn't work.
