When I was about seven or eight, and I knew that Santa wasn't real, I would get up in the middle of the night on Christmas Eve and walk around my neighborhood, reveling in the silence.

We lived on an island in the SF Bay Area -- Alameda -- and it never snowed, but it was often foggy in the winter.
