At the very least, I hope my engagement can help boost your post to get more eyes on it so that others can see it and answer.

While soap operas are common for folks to watch, not everyone did or does. I wasn’t trying to be pedantic or antagonistic, I was trying to answer in a way I hoped would be inclusive to those of us who don’t have relatives that watched them, but still wanted to engage with your post. ☺️

We once had a postal worker throw a (limited edition) vinyl record at our patio door. Not put down, not a gentle toss. Full on threw it, & we caught it on video. Thankfully the record is fine but we were livid.

I have empathy for them, it’s a tough job, but please treat our books and items kindly!

I would say not really, because conflict, drama, secrets, hunks, etc are found in a lot of other genres outside of romantasy, and even outside books. I think they scratch a specific human desire for stories, but I wouldn’t liken them to a soap opera, especially when not everyone used to watch those.

Sometimes vibes, meaning I look at my shelf and just kind of go with what I’m feeling.

If I really can’t decide, I let my dice decide. I roll a d6 to go to a page of my TBR, then roll a d20 to determine which book on that page will be read (there’s only 20 per page). Helps remove choice paralysis.

Unfortunately I don’t have a ton of local options (a used bookstore and Books-A-Million). I refuse to order from Amazon, and BAM is a bit of a last resort for me, so B&N is my best bet, currently.
And what the heck!? Why do mail carriers do crap like that? 😭

Sprayed edges/fancy covers are a case of “it depends.” Is there artistry in it? Is it by an author I enjoy? Is there a deal going on? Is it the only kind of copy I can find?

If I already own it, 9 times out of 10 I won’t buy it, w/rare exceptions. If it’s sloppily done, I don’t want it.

I don’t read digital unless I’m checking a book out from the library. DRM is complicated and I don’t like the idea of the things I pay for being taken away from me on a whim because the platform chooses not to house it anymore or has legal troubles. It’s glorified renting at that point.

If Cats Disappeared From the World by Genki Kawamura
Rating: 5/5 ⭐️
A quick but meaningful read as a man comes to terms with his impending death.
I looked at my husband and said “This is what Matt Haig wishes The Midnight Library was.” They tackle slightly different things, but this impacted me more

I’m not sure it exactly fits the bill, but Mythos by Stephen Fry is great. He retells the myths of the Greek gods (notoriously non-hetero bunch) but adds his own flair and wit. He also narrates it. Again, prob not quite what you’re looking for, but figured I’d throw it out there.

15.5 hours long.

I hope you enjoy it! I think it’ll speak to you as a cat owner and as a gamer. 💙

These will lean more middle school/early high school, but I’ll try:
Tamora Pierce books
Howl’s Moving Castle
Brandon Sanderson has a few middle grade and YA series
My 13 yr old nephew loves the Wings of Fire series

Hopefully this helps a little. I’m only an auntie, so I don’t have a ton of recs

Dang. Don’t know enough about UK insurance regulations (and by enough, I mean anything), but I have to imagine y’all have something similar. Hopefully you can get some answers and hopefully it’s something you can get coverage for! 🤞
Books are such a big investment!

I’m not trying to sell you anything, I just worked in the industry in various capacities for about a decade, so I know a lot about it. Each state’s regulations are different, so if it’s something you’re interested in, definitely ask. As readers we know very well how expensive everything is

Technically it -should- be covered to a point under home/renters (if you’re US based), but I would ask about an addtl rider to your policy for your books. Not much more and for large collections of anything, the extra coverage is going to be much better/pay out more than your standard home policy

I’m probably making it harder on myself, but I just use a spreadsheet, as it’s one sheet of a larger document I use for insurance purposes.
Just in case the worst happens, I want to be able to hand pictures/video and an itemized list to my insurance to prove what I owned. It gets updated frequently

I fucking hate this book, so trust your gut on this one. If you feel off about it, there’s a reason for it. Or several.
November 30, 2025 at 3:59 AM
Not insecure, but maybe it just doesn’t work for you as a reader, and that’s totally okay! Plenty of people either don’t like it or get the ick from it. I think it’s really nice that you’re able to have this introspection and can reflect on what you like and what you don’t in the books you read.

I think it depends.
The album Haunted by Poe, was written in part to be read with her brother book (House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski). A tandem read/listen in that case would heighten the experience.
Overall, I think instrumentals work, but everything else is case by case.
