Just heard that Alex Wheatle has died. He was such a fantastic writer, who captured the intensity, the passion, the humour and the tragedy of life as an Black teen, in contemporary Britain and in times past. Steve McQueen's Small Axe episode four tells his story: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/epis...

On this day in 1984, the Ethiopian writer Baalu Girma vanished, almost certainly kidnapped & murdered by the Derg regime in retaliation for his novel Oromay. The brutal regime’s attempt to silence him failed, as Oromay is a beloved & popular classic. Thank you Ato Baalu. We remember.
