When I was an undergraduate student in Munich over 20 years ago, I shared a flat with a biology student. She was obsessed with Jane Goodall, and with the respect she showed to animals. I have been a fan every since.

Polls can be misleading, of course, but while there is support if prople are asked whether they want benefits back, approval ratings fall markedly if people are asked if they would accept the euro, free movement of people and payments without rebates.

I have to say that I see nothing in the UK that remotely resembles the passionate dedication to Europe that is being shown daily by the astonishingly brave and determined people of Georgia and Ukraine.

It would be quite good if UK voters could also accept that their decisions ( like who to believe about the effects of leaving the EU) have consequences.

As long as the U.K. mourns the fact that it would have to join on the same terms as everyone else, instead of being able to pick and choose, it’s nowhere near ready to join.

SM membership would in all cases involve a much wider-ranging set of legal obligations than most people realise, which would need time to adopt and implement. So it’s possible but not quick or easy.

Correct. And nor is there any quick and easy way to ‘join the SM’. That requires signing the EEA Agreement, which is open to EU and EFTA members. The U.K. is neither. A third leg is theoretically possible but would have to be specially negotiated and would probably be particularly strict.
