I begin walking and she follows, catching up to walk next to me. "I have a name, you know." I don't want to know her name. I don't want to know anything about her at all. My job is to get her from point A to point B and give her a heads up before each game so she can prepare. Not to actually care about or even respect her. I say nothing, lengthening my strides. She matches my pace. "Well, it's Maeve, not that you seem to care." I keep walking. "Okay, Seven." I can feel my body tensing. She is Player Seven. And she will never be more than a job that I never wanted. A nuisance and a waste of time. Especially after what happened forty years ago.
