I'm not even talking open source. I get it, folks think that's nerd shit and glaze over. I'm talking "can you run software in devices you own, even when the manufacturer of said device doesn't want you to?"

You might wonder why I consider certain software projects to be best avoided purely based on primary contributors or founders. You might wonder why I find it off-putting and a huge red flag when something insists above all else that it is "non-political".

Is that you? Are you wondering that? […]

And for a related reason of why I say yes: Synology backed down.

Stupidity can be, at least temporarily, mitigated by using one's voice and wallet.

I'm very curious what a few specific folks think of the framework laptop situation (donating money to projects that are directly connected to DHH).

Like, for these specific people, I want to know if they think this is a valid reason to freak out about Framework and consider a boycott. (I say […]

I think any chance i had of subscribing to the Verge just went out the window with their spate of breathless "prime day" headlines today.

Helpful for some readers, i have no doubt. Beneficial to the org's bottom line, which is tough to find in journalism. I get it. But no thanks.

@mattblaze ooh, interesting: apparently there is an Iptc proposal for new fields to cover textual/accessibility descriptions of images.

@nelson OSM is great. (I've been using CoMaps but previously used organic & it was good too)
kboyd.phpc.social.ap.brid.gy
@mattblaze SmugMug will extract the description from the (I think) exif caption field, if it is populated. Perhaps a related question is, is the caption close enough to the same concept as alt text that that is sufficient? Or should descriptive alt text be handled separately from that?

When you procrastinate on something, and build it up in your head, and end up being even a bit afraid to finally tackle it ...

... do you find that it leaves you with a sense of anxiety that it turned out to be so much easier than expected? Like you must have forgot something integral to it […]

TIL about the Notifications column in Mastodon: You can click the double caret thingy to open a whole panel of notification controls. For example, you can set your account to "Filter" (or, if you'd prefer, "Ignore") notifications from:

- People you don't follow
- People not following you
- New […]

Today I saw someone toot, in dismay, people are posting their everyday life to Mastodon when they could simply buy a diary for $1.99. I can't stop thinking about this.
What if this is all they have? What if they're isolated with or without people in their life? What if the only kind word they […]

Hey boaters of mastodon/fediverse: What do you recommend as a removable mounting solution for a large raymarine navionics screen?

Previously we've been using a terrible, no-good, endlessly frustrating mounting ball "solution". But we have an opportunity to find […]

A ball. A socket for the ball, with a twist knob for tightening it. And another socket on the other end for another ball.

It squeezes the two balls tightly to temporarily mount electronics like fish finders.

This is a cancer that has to be stopped!

What's with this #government of ours? #canadians take note.

Bill C-8 is currently in second reading in #parliament. It's nominally about increasing "cyber" security. But it contains one of the most chilling things I've seen in #Legislation.

In short, it allows a government minister to, with […]

@chris @ErickaSimone And be aware that the nature of ActivityPub makes it more difficult to see instances of this. Not all content is propagated everywhere; sometimes you have to view the original post's link to see the full extent of things.

So "I don't see it, therefore, it doesn't exist" is […]

@ivory Why do some posts (in this case, a boost that very specifically contained a blocked word) seem to evade my filters in ivory?

Also, if there was some way to "peek" at blocked content (without making it permanently visible), that would be helpful.

Ah, finally, an update on flu and covid vaccine plans in BC. Thanks, @thetyee !

What's seeming to perform better so far - LP81 Spikevax, or Comirnaty?
