If a temporary resident of the White House can totally demolish the East Wing to build a gaudy ballroom, without any authority, approval, or regulation, he can tear down the rest of the White House to build a Walmart. That this destruction is allowed underscores how off the rails our country is now.

The argument is: We're all meant to sacrifice a bit, so that tariffs can help rebuild American manufacturing. Let's ask American manufacturers whether they're helping.

I'm guessing journos are going to stop asking me why the "hard data" are so good, given the economic news has been so grim.

The lesson I hope they draw is an eternal one: Bad policy leads to bad outcomes, but the actual economy doesn't move at the pace of the political cycle.

The job market continues to slow, and it's pretty dramatic. Keeping our head above water (for now).

August jobs growth was only +22k. July revised up +6k to +79k. June was revised down by -27k to -13k. Average jobs growth over the three months = +29k.

Unemployment rose a tick to 4.3%

I know the focus today is on "the numbers." But lemme share a feeling: I'm worried.

The economy was in a good place in late 2024. That's no longer true. And the trajectory is, at a minimum, concerning.

That's millions of peoples lives, and millions of stories of pain.

I'm not a big believer in diving into the industry breakdowns because I believe that all jobs matter.

But the Administration has made dramatic policy shift to boost manufacturing, and it just ain't working. Manufacturing employment fell -12k, and is down -78k over the year.

Drop a like to add your thanks to the BLS staff who put together the jobs numbers. They've done so yet again this month, despite the arbitrary firing of their boss, uninformed social media insults, and the prospect of being led by an unqualified ideologue.

Thank you BLS-ers!

Updating my recession watch chart.

Note that you want to weight these measures according to their signal-to-noise ratio. The smoother lines are more signal, less noise, and they're suggesting the economy has slowed pretty sharply.

The executive threatening the Fed that it can only remain independent if it makes the choices it wants, is equivalent to eliminating Fed independence.

States should resist even minor intrusions into their elections by the executive branch of the federal government. They should contest every effort by this administration to encroach on their right to administer elections via executive order, informal request or any generic claim under Article II.

Dems. Wanna get your polling out of the gutter? Stop talking about redrawing house maps in blue states and do it. Go big. Don't match them seat for seat. Blow them out of the water. Then endorse Mamdani. You're welcome.
