good morning blue sky, last night, schmidt ocean institute got 3 minutes and 45 seconds with an absolutely beautiful cirrothauma murrayi while diving hydrothermal vents off the galapagos 🧪🦑

an orange dumbo octopus in the middle of propelling itself, arms half straight, half curved in a hook-like shape. its mantle fins are in the downward portion of a wing-flap like motion. the mantle is conically shaped, kind of like a bullet an orange dumbo octopus, its arms and webbing in between fully splayed out, floating perpendicular to the camera. we are looking just slightly upward at it and can see the fleshy stems each sucker sits on top of as well as thin cirri on either side of each sucker. view of the underside of the dumbo octopus. there's fantastic clarity on each sucker and cirri pair, and we can see that the webbing between each arm is translucent, with a loose, wrinkled texture in the center portion of each web closer to the octopus' body where it's not fully outstretched. the entire image is reminiscent of a fleshy flower, like something @hannahorca.bsky.social might draw orange dumbo octopus, again caught in the middle of propelling itself by contracting all of its arms. we can see that the mantle fins are shaped similarly to a shark's dorsal fin, except more rounded, and that they are translucent toward the edge. we can also make out the eye of the octopus, which is a very faint grey, because it's actually covered entirely by skin, as this species is basically blind

I was searching for photos with books in them to use as background images, but just ended up distracted by the cuteness of my animals in said photos.
