Ocean science, Right Whales! Climate solutions, poetry, politics, editorial cartoons, The Everglades, good writing, fun art. Defender of Greenland from expansionist loons.
Calving season has started: Cheers to new mom, 17-yo North Atlantic Right Whale, Champagne, who was sighted with her second known calf off the coast of South Carolina on 11/28/25. May they both thrive and swim safely thru our exploding seas.

"Imagine if we truly understand complex whale communication and can extend our term “language” to them.

...such breakthroughs would not only fundamentally redefine what it means to be human and pave the way to instituting new protections for whales, the ocean and beyond."

ICYMI, my analysis of how the Trump administration will contribute to the extinction of beloved endangered marine and coastal animals.
Donald Trump’s Second Term Will Be Bad News for Endangered Ocean and Coastal Animals • The Revelator
The waters around the U.S. are home to threatened species who need conservation policies to save them from extinction. They won’t get that for the next four years.

And if it's not enough to sabatoge democracy and fry the planet while abusing our allies... let's see if we can facilitate the extinction of a consequential species.

New Right Whales in the Atlantic.
A population in critical jeopardy but yay! The first baby whale of this calving season has been sighted. Thanks be to the mama whale--and to a conscientious human boater who reported seeing the pair. Go whales! Slow boaters!

Squilla's calf, North Atlantic Right Whale identified as #5120. A female born in Dec. 2020 or perhaps Jan. 2021. Could not survive entanglement that bound her for two years. Died in 2024.

Bit of joy found in a link from Sadie Stein’s Read Like the Wind August 3 column. Every day I think I have to cancel the NYT because whoever writes headlines makes my brain explode. But then this, and Sunday morning becomes splendid.
The enduring legacy of Karen Blixen’s enchanting bouquets
Famed for her richly descriptive writing, the aristocratic Danish novelist Karen Blixen was also a passionate gardener who brought the same evocative sensibility to her beguiling bouquets.
