From what I recall, the "WebView" that non-apple apps were required to use isn't actually the same as what the Safari on iOS uses. It's updated less frequently, buggier, and missing features.

… I wish there was a store that sells all this same stuff, except does it right, you know?

Since you asked to be corrected - "floppy" vs "hard" refers to the material that the "disk" inside the package is made from. In floppy disks, it's thin flexible plastic (a lot like magnetic tape). In hard disks, it's thicker non-flexible metal, glass, or ceramic.

They're probably switching back and forth between gas (dimmed marker lights) and brakes (brake lights full brightness).

Most cars with LED lights dim them by flickering them on/off really quickly. You usually won't notice in person, but cameras can pick it up.

Honestly not a bad price for someone looking for a 32MB SIMM to use in a SIMMCONN to upgrade the MIDI soundfont memory on their AWS64 soundcard.

It should work fine, but the air might feel a bit colder coming out of the vents during times when the humidifier is running but the furnace is not.

True enough, tho black components only became common starting ~2003 or so.

I threw an actual 5¼" drive into my FLP02, in classic IBM PC AT gray, and it's delightfully mismatched.

(Waiting on an adapter to add a 3½" drive too, gonna mount a greaseweazle internally to connect them to a modern PC)

Annoyingly hard to find beige blu-ray drives to properly colour-match things. There *are* some out there, like the Pioneer BDR-212XJ which was only sold in Japan. (Supports BDXL, but not UltraHD)

I think that people can get a better idea of why this is important if they reverse how they're thinking.

The main job of the suspension isn't to lift the vehicle above the road—it's actually to keep the tires pushed down against the road.

Most modern digital metric thermostats work in increments of 0.5°C, which is a bit smaller than 1°F. That's plenty of precision for indoor comfort.

Weather reports are imprecise enough that the temperature can vary by more than 1°C in different places in the same city anyways.

CDs have an interesting advantage over books, in that if you have a CD (and a computer with a CD drive…) then you *also* have a DRM-free digital copy of the music that you can carry around on any MP3 player or phone.

I could see the music industry trying to kill that in favour of recurring revenue.

Honestly, at this point I kinda wish I could replace some of my MMPB copies of books with ebooks without having to re-purchase them. It's neat to have a bookshelf full of some well-read copies of my favourite books, but if they're on my shelf they're not with me - and my ebook reader usually is.

To clarify this a bit - the Space Shuttle's heat radiators were mounted on the inside of the cargo bay doors. That way they were protected during launch and landing, and could be exposed in space without needing a separate mechanism to deploy them.

A lot of this stuff applies to signals on cables, too! "Cable internet" is radio transmission the same as wireless, except that the radio signal is trapped inside a "radio guide" cable (That's what the RG in RG-11 stands for) DOCSIS 3.1 does 4096-QAM with OFDM.

at some point I read about using antenna diversity and multipath/beamforming to increase bandwidth and the idea felt bonkers.

Transmit two different things on the same frequency at the same time such that they propagate differently, and with luck the receiver can separate them again.

Some days you go and look up what 1024-QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) means, then you cease to understand how any information ever gets usefully transmitted at high speed.

Reading up on these machines, the actual programs they use can be very heavily customized by the operator. Whether or not there's a prewash, the number of rinse cycles, the cycle lengths, temperatures, etc. can *all* be configured for each of the 4-6 program options exposed to users.

I'm stuck with some Huebsch laundromat machines and explicit warnings are posted telling people not to put powder detergent into the dispenser.

People still do, and it leaves the dispenser clogged up :/

That said, I haven't actually checked whether they drain after the prewash.
November 5, 2025 at 2:57 PM
(that said, the dispensers do usually have the ability to add a *separate* liquid bleaching agent, if desired)
November 5, 2025 at 2:47 PM
I think the unfortunate thing here is that most modern front-loading ("High Efficiency") laundry machines only accept liquid detergent in their dispensers. You can put powder detergent directly into the drum, but that means it'll be in the pre-wash, so the main wash will be less effective.
November 5, 2025 at 2:46 PM
… and in my experience, the one powder option is often sold out. I usually have a better time finding it at drug stores and whatnot where people are less likely to be looking for dishwasher detergent.
November 4, 2025 at 11:41 PM
I wonder if the same advantage that powers have over liquids for dishwashing detergent (able to include multiple chemical compounds that wouldn't be shelf-stable if mixed in liquid form) also applies to laundry detergent.

A proper functioning news site should have editorial content decisions made independently of advertising decisions of course, tho losing advertisers would certainly hurt.

I wonder if Sony has tried to exert any control over ANN via their recent "alliance" with (partial aquisition of) Kadokawa.

Ah, if it's something from the top down in the organization rather than something happening just on the forums, I suppose there's not much you can do.
