I was Bluesky user #308, and have been a major booster of this platform since the beginning, but I'm starting to think that the skeptics were right.

It isn't too late to fix things, but I'm doubtful the team will take this excellent advice from @brunodias.bsky.social to heart:
Jay Graber Confuses the Gas and Brake Pedals
As your new Head of Comms I advise you to please stop posting this shit.

"This is beyond politics; this is about care. Some say that medical societies must remain apolitical. However, ignoring political issues that affect health means ignoring real barriers to care. Staying silent while pretending to be neutral is, in effect, a form of complicity." - @thelancet.com
Gaza's healthocide: medical societies must not stay silent
The catastrophic humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with the apparent deliberate targeting of health-care infrastructure and personnel, has highlighted a profound challenge to the global medical community. ...

Blacksky is currently using the Bluesky moderation decisions, that's the issue

This looks absolutely terrible. Banning a Black user for calling out racism from the CEO's follow list proves the exact problem Black users keep highlighting here. Moderation should protect users from harm, not protect power from criticism. Full transparency is needed now. Fix this, Bluesky.

Before creating For You I actually built a link-focused personalized feed Links For You.

It uses the same algorithm but:
- it only looks at posts with links
- it groups all posts with the same link to avoid showing different posts that have the same link

Feedback welcome!

They can. It really depends on the rules of the hotel and of the booking website.

I'm often annoyed by John Gruber, but he is good on this one, if perhaps a bit overly optimistic at the end:

"Apple’s removal of ICEBlock from the App Store is, in multiple ways, worse than Apple’s removal of HKmap-dot-live from the App Store back in 2019."
Complying With ‘Demand’ From Trump Administration, Apple Removes ICEBlock From App Store
It’s rather chilling to consider what Apple would have done if the Trump administration had “demanded” a list of device IDs and user identities for everyone who had installed ICEBlock. Or what Apple *...

I had missed this new polling data, released back in June. I had always assumed that the Dems lost because of low voter turnout, but this suggests that if the non-voters had turned up to vote, many of them would have voted for Trump. Depressing.

@spacecowboy17.bsky.social I see you have a version of "for you" with videos, I wonder if it would be possible to make another that only contains posts that have links (especially links to news stories)? Thanks.

(Ugh. And they need an edit button. That really should be "blinded" not "blindsided.")

There are people who spend their lives studying the interaction between online sociality and tech. Some of them work in Trust & Safety, others work as researchers in anthropology, sociolinguistics, and related fields. They desperately need some of these folks on their team.

The Bluesky team treats every social interaction as an engineering problem. They have made some significant advances through this approach, and may continue to do so, but that very success has also blindsided them to aspects of social interaction that can't be reduced to tech.

We’re system architects at core. We built a decentralized network so you could run your own moderation, but beyond that our upcoming healthy discourse project is taking some swings at the interaction model that drives these dynamics on Bluesky. Excited to start seeing it in action.

The New York Times has repeatedly framed Trump’s unilateral attack on government agencies and civil society group’s (like universities) as a “tussle” between equals. And they continue to use the phrase “to heel,” as if his acts of intimidation are part of the presidents’s constitutional duties.
The affair of the sword is the latest tussle between Mr. Trump and those who run the nation’s nonpartisan culture and and historical institutions, a number of whom he has fired or sought to bring to heel, starting with the National Archives.

Someone built a better algorithm for Bluesky:

A personalized algorithmic feed based on your likes.

It finds people who liked the same posts as you, and shows you what else they've liked recently.

You can also train it by asking it to show more/less posts like the one it shows you.
