so I'm confused about why Sinha is using it, when it was intended in the 1860s to highlight the speaker's (presumed) ignorance and racial/class differences. (I've noticed where it gets deployed in the fiction I'm reading, absolutely, and from several authors.)

and, like, we know that white people used that spelling system even if the person speaking had a NYC accent - the speech from Sojourner Truth that was later written down by someone else is a pretty big example.

well i was wrong about it being sleeping time. i was sure it was...

so I'm reading the Rise and Fall of the Second American Republic some more. I'm confused about the quotes from Black people in the 1860s that use old dialect-style spelling. I can't tell from the endnotes where it comes from?

it was so good when my brother visited and we talked mostly about books for half an hour?? like yes, that's the social interaction i need.

too bad about how I'm too sick to do that kind of thing but rarely.

i do not like being touched or sitting close to people! (except small children, my one specific grandparent, and companion animals) but my subconscious has decided that in my isolation, it needs to give me lots of touch via dreams, like it forgot that that we hate it.
keristars.bsky.social
the thing is, for the most part, the dreams aren't things i want when I'm awake. but my subconscious is using common story elements + vague memories to be like "we need more social interaction and, like, touching??? real people who aren't our parents, we are too isolated"

draining, that's the word

I might take a peek at GR later, then! There's just SO many books, and knowing someone with similar taste helps a lot with finding the right ones. And some tracked is still pretty good. :)
keristars.bsky.social
i think I'm ready to go back to sleep, but i would like to avoid yesterday's marathon, and also the dreams. there's a specific type of recurring dream i get that I'm pretty sure is my subconscious Inventing things to fulfill social/emotional needs? and they're exhausting, or, hm. they sap me?
keristars.bsky.social
have you ever kept track of what books your children loved? my niblings are 5 and 8 and I keep thinking I wish I'd taken notes over the years! their taste seems really similar to my nibs'

(I think 8yo's going to love Aventurine when he's ready for her, I'm so impatient to introduce him!)

just, relatedly, i often tell people that one of the best things i did for my mental health was to stop being snarky/judgmental about others' appearances or non-hurtful behavior. it took effort to rewire those habits!

it was weird to me that others didn't see the same issue with pseudo-racism.

the amount of bigoted genAI shit from Hashtag Resistance accounts that I see if I look at the replies to any news-related account was enough for me to nod and think yeah, i can see how using slurs against an anthropomorphized machine is making them a habit. It's kind of the same thing, "just AI/DJT"
keristars.bsky.social
oh gosh and the Robot Floyd clip where apparently it was supposed to be ironically funny to recreate his murder using a robot that looks like him?? 🤬

like 10000% i didn't doubt bsky staff have been seeing those more than most, because of the 1 to many thing and that set off Hailey's post.

very much a case of "i need someone to validate what I'm seeing, two sides that are right except one side is arguing with a strawman they built up, not the other side's actual statements"

it's a relief!

There is plenty of evidence that using slur-like or slur-derived language makes you more likely to use actual slurs! I thought we all knew that edgelord ironic 4chan racism is still racism and is likely to incept you into being more open to actual racist beliefs by now!
keristars.bsky.social
I'm so glad to see this addressed. i followed a few QTs on this and saw people like Bree (goose.ski?) who are Black saying this! and a tiktok supercut of people recreating racist shit, except for robots/AI.

people were equating cursing to racist slurs, too, like utter context collapse.
keristars.bsky.social
ooh, yes! I didn't realize you were looking for very specific type of lies. I was like "very strange the no one has written about it when falsehoods in documents were so common", but if it's deliberate and not because of racist/classist bias, yeah that's different
keristars.bsky.social
i mean even if they aren't fully out and out lying, i feel like it's pretty obvious that truths were stretched and massaged and aligned with biases so they may as well be lies.

and this is just my interpretation of missionary descriptions!

tbqh I'm not sure I'd be awake right now except my bladder was screaming after 12 hours of sleep and also i was developing a dehydration headache, so i had to get up and take care of both things.

i feel like "well i *said* i was exhausted!" lol
