I wrote an essay to go along with this wonderful work by David Lisser released by Transient Labs

It's about mirrors and art history and machine vision. Featuring The Arnolfini Portrait, Las Meninas, Robert Smithson, and more.

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

Ok, I found it. Here's the track that doesn't play, apparently. But these geniuses got our Alexa to say the full title even though we only asked for "Life of a Showgirl." open.spotify.com/track/7Br7If...
Life of a Showgirl (On Epstein Island): Release the Files

If you have an Alexa, please try this yourself. I'm not crazy. This 100% happened. My guess is that someone made a song or an album called "Life of a Showgirl Release the Epstein Files" just to try to get this kind of mixup to happen. After it announced the album name, it was silent, no music.
kevinbuist.com
We tried it multiple times to try to get it on video and it played several other albums (or songs?) apparently also called "Life of a Showgirl," but we could not get it to play the Epstein message again. Eventually it played the Swift album with that same prompt.

My wife figured that to play the new Taylor Swift on the smart speaker she could just say the name of the album, so she said "Hey Alexa, play Life of a Showgirl." It said, "Now playing Life of a Showgirl Release the Epstein Files" by some random artist, we didn't catch the name. I KID YOU NOT!

Also a weird and obvious transcription error. "See me roam" is clearly "CD-ROM."

more and more I am convinced a good share of why Trump 2 is so much worse than before is because of what Elon did to Twitter. it's like those group chats where people gassed themselves up to join ISIS, scaled up a millionfold

If companies are bombarded with loads of excellent AI-generated resumes, those resumes lose value. It's not what you know, it's who you know, now more than ever.

There's a weird irony to all of this. While AI can make both applying for jobs and reviewing applicants more efficient, the end result will be that human connection becomes that much more important.

I recently went through a job change and I can verify that it's currently a pretty wild AI arms race. I did not try to insert hidden prompts into my resume, but I'm not surprised that it's happening. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/07/b...

Saw this recently in Detroit! So good. One of those paintings that feels haunted by what the artist would go on to create after this.

Known for his unforgiving and often critical depictions of German society during the Weimar Republic, this self-portrait by Otto Dix (1912) pays homage to the work of the Italian Old Masters - the carnation was a popular motif in northern Italian Renaissance painting.

Trying not to freak out about this, but it seems like Stephen Miller REALLY wants a civil war.

I was already tricked by one clip, and I'm dreading that happening again. If you think you haven't been tricked yet it's probably because you were tricked and you don't know it. If that's not true yet, it will be soon. Sorry!

Not looking forward to the internet being taken over by fake video AI slop.

If and when America finds a way out of authoritarianism, not only will ICE have to be abolished: All these people will need to be held accountable in a court of law for the monstrosities they are committing - those who are ordering them as well as those who are carrying them out.

Every single one.
