I can't believe Miller's got this reputation as a Machiavellian genius, when he's got so little strategic sense and can't restrain his immediate urge to hurt brown people even for a moment in order to look at the long-run picture.

The CPD are notorious right wing trash racist murderers who cluster together in neighborhoods either not within or on the edge of city limits, too! They are natural allies to ICE!

I don't have a smart phone. Why would I want one? I work from home, and I like using a browser. When I go into town to run errands I want to get my business over with and get back home, without scrolling through an idiot box. Why should I have to spend hundreds of $$ just to scan a fucking menu?

btw this is also personal to me bc a lot of people (particularly those experiencing even low level psychosis) also don't like smartphones due to being terrified of being tracked. they literally don't trust them. (and they probably shouldn't lmao) they still deserve to be able to take the goddamn bus

and yes this is personal to me. my gran nor either of my uncles nor my grandpa nor my neighbor have smartphones. that's 5 people in my life who don't have smart phones

"everybody has a smartphone these days lol" false. that's something you made up. only 91% of Americans have smartphones. those last 9% are still people who deserve services (and probably need them more than anybody else). that's still like 30.6 million people

You don't need as much "welfare" when more income goes to the workers who produce wealth in the first place, instead of to unearned rents for the wealthy.

The inequality gap between the US and Europe doesn't result from the latter’s welfare states, which are in fact funded by more regressive systems of indirect taxation. Rather, the key to higher levels of equality is a more egalitarian distribution of pretax market incomes

The Left Needs to Rethink How It Understands Inequality
The 21st-century left has often argued that the solution to rampant inequality is income redistribution. But this may not be a silver bullet. What workers need is power over employers and the market.

Also sometimes (often) the causal power of words does not depend on the speaker's genuinely held beliefs, but lie purely in their expressive power

A lot of people on the liberal/leftist side of things underestimate this. They like to dismiss Republicans talking about dems and others being "satanists" and "in league with the devil" as red meat rhetoric to the base and it is that but it's also more. It's the Schmittian dichotomy distilled.
swordsjew.bsky.social
i do not respect this belief but it is enlightening to wrap your head around the fact that a significant number of your political rivals believe you are literally in league with satan, and act with concomitant zeal and brutality

Big city police are one of the most naturally Republican constituencies in the world. The fact that ICE is systematically cultivating their hostility is chef's kiss-level strategic stupidity on the part of the Trump administration.

I was told not to teach a class on the intellectual histories of Zionism and Anti-Zionism next year - not because they doubted I could teach it fairly, but because it would attract too many politicians scrutinizing the syllabus.

A society where that is a valid fear is no longer fully democratic.

One of the more incredible stories out of LA this year has been how a taco review blog became the best on-the-ground coverage of ICE raids in the city.

They do a dispatch every day, follow-up on the kidnapped people (which almost no media outlet has done), and fact-check government claims.

I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections

what the fuck is even cheap food anymore if they make pasta expensive? Are we expected to just chug corn syrup for every meal like a fruit fly or what the fuck?

If your considered analysis is that everyone has gone completely mad except for you, then is it likely that’s what happened? Or is it you that is the arse here.

I am so tired of being told that I, a person who got a significant portion of my diet out of dumpsters in my early 20's, hold elitist & "luxury" beliefs by people who have been Professors of Thinking at Harvard since before I was born.
