„BURN IT WITH FIRE“ might sound dramatic, but if you listen to the stories teachers (worldwide) have to tell about how kids take everything ChatGPT says at face value without questioning any of its answers, it actually seems like a pretty reasonable demand.

This absolutely bonkers discussion between a writer and ChatGPT plays out like one of the greatest sci-fi stories I've ever read. The point, once again, is that ChatGPT is worse than useless for even the most basic things it pretends to be able to do. BURN IT WITH FIRE.

Our book has now appeared, a bit ahead of schedule. Its in Open Access, meaning the chapters are all free to download either as epub or pdf from this link. I’ll put a thread together on what the individual chapters are about.

Why... why do people not think of ways to encourage interaction with other humans to talk about the great books? Why this obsession with talking to a computer pretending (with very limited success) to be an imaginary human? I just... what? What? *screams*

Go fuck yourself, AI assholes.
We’re developing a new interactive chat product designed specifically for romance authors, allowing readers to engage in real-time conversations with your characters. This not only offers a unique experience for readers but also creates a new revenue stream for you.

Why Consider This?
1. New Revenue Model – Unlike traditional publishing, you earn revenue every time a reader chats with your character.
2. Built for Romance Authors – More than just an AI chatbot, this platform is designed to enhance emotional depth and reader engagement.
3. You Stay in Control – You define your characters’ personalities, storylines, and dialogues to ensure they stay true to your vision.

Exclusive Early-Adopter Opportunity
We’re offering an exclusive 50% revenue share to early authors who join us. This means that after covering AI and operational costs, you receive 50% of the net revenue from all reader interactions with your character.

This is a very common sentiment, and I understand where it comes from. But it simply does not survive philosophical scrutiny. We implicitly or explicitly always put at least some numerical bounds on the value on human life. We don't like to think about it that way, but we do.
kellybarnhill.bsky.social
Once we start putting a numerical value on a human life, we are lost. And evil has won.

Let me be clear: every human life is of an incalculable worth. Each of you is precious beyond words, beyond thought, beyond reckoning. When men say otherwise, the humanity they deny is their own.

When I think about what‘s currently happening, I am sadly reminded of the fact, that Machiavelli wrote down some thoughts about how to gain control over a failed state, and and then he wrote a very thick book on how to defend a republic against such attacks.

But only one of his writings is famous…

Mythical symbolic forms of this sort can apparently be rather unproblematic to include in our science-influenced society. A fascinating attempt to reconcile two world views.

The Austrian far-right party that will apparently soon head our next government with support by the Conservatives wants to order all scientists and academics to publish in German only. I think the last international law scholar to do so was Carl Schmitt. (via @oliveras.bsky.social)
kevlange.bsky.social
That might very well be true! Then I think though, that we‘re back to the question of what Cassirer means by „myth“ when he ascribes this extreme traditionalist/conservative element to it.
kevlange.bsky.social
If we accept that modern myths don’t necessarily entail gods per se, but deal with, i.e., the mythological idea of a people, like nazism does, then it has to be taken very seriously. In fact, I believe Cassirer wrote a whole book on the „myth of the state“.
kevlange.bsky.social
He‘s not more clear on the issue in the rest of the book either. Though in all fairness, it is only an essay, so I am hoping to find a more thorough explanation in his philosophy of symbolic forms.
kevlange.bsky.social
What‘s so frustrating about Cassirers take here is that he doesn‘t make it clear at all what he means by „myth“. He only talks about the blurred line between myth and religion.

If he talks about simple magic-rituals, this makes sense. If he talks about the world of greek myths, it‘s not convincing
