The Hayley Williams seems to be a favorite of my students this semester (along with the Bad Bunny album). And it just came out last week!

I officially recommended Michael Mayo's Fly. I've been following his career since he appeared on Kneebody's EP By Fire (2019).

tough year to make a call. So far it feels like a better year for new music than last year. I'm going to make a plug for my favorite new release in jazz:

New England not doing us proud...

Basically, after this year, I don’t know how to continue treating any of the big three societies as my scholarly home.

Agreed. Re accessibility, SEM did the best job by making every session hybrid and incorporated into the conference platform (due to the international orientation of the membership/visa troubles/fears crossing the border). But my experiences as an nb/trans person at SEM were profoundly alienating

This whole thing is so sad and preventable

The reason I don’t make diagrams is that I don’t have much visual instinct. At all. I literally never think of including images and I have to remind myself that other people really appreciate them.

It’s why I’m thinking I’ll not do anymore committee work and will treat it as I do the other extremely corporate society where I hold a membership

Surely. “Ruin the Friendship” for example.

I got divorced at 34, so I can relate to that. I can’t relate to the glitzy, cinematic, old Hollywood sound of this one as much as I respect the conceit.

It’s my favorite fall release, and one of my favorite albums of the year

This is just anecdotal evidence: I met a Swiftie Lyft driver a month ago and everything she had to say about this album sounded like defensive doctrine. The Swifties I know personally who are brave enough to criticize this album feel very protective of her yet they’re disappointed.

I dare say, she was never “cool.” She’s always been a bit cringe/awkward but relatable. No matter how rich she got, she managed to stay relatable to her core audience. I think what has gone wrong for some Swifties with this album is that the relatability piece is missing
