The theme over the last month in many conversations about fascism: you never know when the new, terrifying rule (whatever it is, regardless of its legitimacy) is actually going to be applied.
The year isn't over so my opinions are still in flux. Consult the replies to Ann's query to expand your musical horizons.
OK I'm making a list. I have my opinions but what was your favorite album released this year?

pre-writing a devastating obituary for your enemy is god-tier hating of a kind you don’t often see anymore. renaissance haterism. beautiful stuff.
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

It seems that every parent/geandparent of small children in my town had the exact same idea I had for how to spend the late Saturday morning. I’m only here because it’s across the street from my favorite local auto shop. So here I am, sitting outside, waiting for my winter tire installation.

The MA Senate will be voting on An Act Regarding Free Expression on Thursday 11/13. This Boston Globe article touts this as a positive development, but while the protections for libraries are welcome, this version of the bill strips all protections from authors. www.bostonglobe.com/2025/11/08/m...

Transphobes are already targeting the biggest star in women's soccer and baselessly alleging she's a man because she's Black. This is what trans people warned would happen. Gender policing that becomes explicitly racial.

This is because Netflix has a specific list of approved digital cameras and a specific production pipeline that ends up making everything look extremely same-y. Nothing else looks like a Netflix show, but every Netflix show looks like a Netflix show.

It’s been a pleasure working with Lex and everyone in the politics vertical at Teen Vogue. I’m heartbroken that my column, Disability Visibility, is gone. Teen Vogue was one of the few places that published disabled journalists regularly. I just spent the last 2 months working on my next column
I was laid off from Teen Vogue today along with multiple other staffers, and today is my last day.

certainly more to come from me when the dust has settled more, but to my knowledge, after today, there will be no politics staffers at Teen Vogue.

When I first learned Brazilian history, a teachers told me that one theory for why the dictatorship ended was fatigue, ie, “Soldiers were struggling to find dates.” Romantic relationships have long been imagined to play a part in changing stupid politics. So what happens when stoicism takes over?

The hard thing about teaching a pop music theory course is that the history bit is just missing and students make these sweeping statements about genre and I'm like... yeah, no.

Just one third of Jewish voters didn’t fall for the scaremongering & Islamophobia, which trails the 40 percent (and rising?) number that say they are sympathetic with non-/anti-zionism. What’s interesting to me is that gap of about 7 percent (which is significant). I’d love some analysis on that.
I found it. Thanks.

I am a queer Jew and lived in Maine for 2 years (and now live in the area). It is easily the most antisemitic state I know (also one of the whitest).
This guy has to do the work. Don’t tell me he was a “dumb kid” when he got it. We forgive so much in the name of white, Christian youth.
when people respond to Black folks who live in or near Maine by talking about how Platner’s tattoo etc make them feel without any curiosity about why we have the analyses that we do, what’s happening is an actual disregard for learning something about our living conditions, which is racist

I have watched as so-called "compromise" positions on transgender people's rights have failed over and over--in statehouses, the Biden White House, and in liberal rhetoric. There is no middle ground acceptable to the politicians, activists, and billionaires obsessed with trans people and our lives.

The most amazing thing about English accents is just how localized and specific they are. For such a tiny country, you’d think all of those regionalisms would start to disappear.
