Yeah - this isn't colorisation in any meaningful way. It's an image-as-prompt, and that's especially deceptive when applied to history.

I did - that, the final treaty structure, etch. Hell, I found the whole back end as his life winds down emotional, in that way. It being the book I was reading as I turned 50 gave it a little extra heft too.

One of my favourite examples of his character was where he's offered bribes to forward a course of action he was already going to forward, but then returns the bribes when the course of action doesn't actually happen.

Finished Duff Cooper's Talleyrand last night, which was - as the quotes I've dropped over the last couple of weeks show - a lot of fun. Sympathetic to Talleyrand's mastery of diplomacy and/or terminal backstabbing while also letting the bus run over him when he deserves it. A long, fascinating life
